Big Win: Iggy's Back!

Iggy's Back...A solid effort by the Flames last night, and they were led by their Captain Jarome Iginla. After last game where Iginla played hard and had chances, you knew this was coming. Skating down the right wing and letting go an absolute bomb of a wrist shot top corner right off the bar. Vintage. Classic. Standard. Call it what you want, it was a beauty. Add that to two assists, a plethora af chances and a +3 rating; great to see. The obvious team MVP to this point, Mikka played well and came up with timely saves, considering he faced two five on threes and countless other powerplays. Phaneuf, save for the defensive lazyness on the Nash shorty, played well, as did Jay Bo, who put home his first as a Flame. The usual unsung heroes were quietly effective as well. Nystrom, Glencross were hard on the puck and doing all the the little things. Still no sign of Olli Jokinen, but with Iginla showing up, hopefully he's not too far behind. Mark Giordano continued his very impressive play. The guy does everything: kills penalties, runs the second powerplay unit, rarely makes mistakes, fights, and hits. Finally, a beauty spin-o-rama from Sjostrom, effectively sealed the win for his first in Flames silks.
Aside form the standard lapse, where the Flames went without a shot for 21 minutes and 14 seconds, they played a strong game. Undisciplined penalties almost spelled the end, but a big rush by Dion and the goal by Iginla gave the team the lift they needed. When this team is forechecking hard, coming back defensively and have their big guns firing, they're a formidable unit capable of beating anyone. They are a well coached team with the right ingredients, but they need to stay consistent, which has been the knock on them since Darryl went upstairs. The defensive lapses, need to be shored up as they will not get away with it against teams like, well, Chicago, as we painfully witnessed.
So now sitting at 6-2-1 and 4-0 against the North West Division, the Flames continue their homestand with two big games forthcoming: saturday night they host the Oilers, followed by a date with the NW leading and suddenly resurgent, Colorado Avalanche. With a win tomorrow night against the Jackets, the Oilers will have the same record as Calgary. Let's Hope for a better effort from Nash and company in E-Town.
