The year was 2012 and Galchenyuk was selected No.3 overall by the Montreal Canadiens. Recognized as an offensive threat dating back to his days with the Sarnia Sting, Galchenyuk's ability to get on the scoresheet was undeniable. Defensively not as strong of a player, but sometimes the risk is worth the reward.
In 101 games with the Sting Galchenyuk put up a whopping 144 points (58G, 86A) in the years of 2010-2011 & 2012-2013. Excluded is the 2011-2012 season due to the leg injury that kept Galchenyuk out limiting his play to only two games for the season.
In the first two seasons in the NHL Galchenyuk was finding his ground putting up 58 points (22G, 36A) in 113 games between the 2012-2013 & the 2013-2014 seasons. In the third season (2014-2015) it seemed like Galchenyuk found his groove putting up 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points in 80 games played, which was followed by another successful season where Galchenyuk would score 30 goals and 26 assists in 82 games for 56 points (career high).
The following two seasons Galchenyuk would score 44 points in 61 games and 51 points in 82 games before being traded to Arizona where he still put up 44 points in a 72 game season. However, after this season is where the struggles began as in the 2019-2020 season Galchenyuk would struggle both offensively and defensively with the Penguins and the Wild before signing a one-year deal with the Senators. The Senators did not appear to like what Galchenyk brought to the table and just after eight games sent him packing to the Hurricanes, who would flip him to the Leafs.
With cap constraints for the Leafs, resigning Galchenyuk would provide a viable option up-front. I do believe Brooks & Robertson both should get a look on the main roster in the upcoming season, but Galchenyuk's chemistry with Nylander & Tavares was beginning to look somewhat promising. Even in the post-season the line of Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-Nylander was impressive against the Canadiens. Should the price and term be right, I think Galchenyuk is a player the Leafs should resign and bring back, and should also give him a look on the powerplay. While, I will say Galchenyuk may not have shown the offensive threat/talent he once displayed, his chemistry and playing time with Nylander could be the boost he needs.
