Avs Re-Sign Svatos

Posted 7:43 PM ET | Comments 1
After a sophomore slump, a few trade deadline rumors and looking arbitration in the eyes, the Colorado Avalanche re-signed Marek Svatos to a one year deal.

Obviously Francois Giguere and the Avs are hoping that Svatos can return to his rookie form where he finished tied on the team and 3rd among rookies in goals with 32. He also notched 9 game winning, tying the rookie record. Last season he fell off though only scoring 15 goals and 30 points and was a healthy scratch and different times late in the season.

I honestly think that with the addition of Ryan Smyth and the emergences of Stastny and Wolski last season, Svatos could easily score between 20 and 30 goals in the upcoming season. He'll likely see powerplay time and unless he has an impressive training camp, he'll likely be on the 3rd line with Arnason and Laperriere, a trio that could add a very nice scoring compliment to the top 2 lines.

Even if he slumps again or has about the same performance as last season, it's only a one year deal and he's possible trade bait at the deadline if the Avs are in playoff contention, which they should be. I think this move is another step in the right direction for the 07-08 Avs.
