After seeing what the Red Wings did today, signing Stuart for 4 more years and signing Conklin to backup Osgood for next year, it leaves me to wonder if the Red Wings will go after anyone else. Last year, the Wings did not go after anyone really till the end of free agency when they signed Dallas Drake. With Kenny Holland saying that he would still like to sign either McCarty or Downey or both, I don't see anyone that the Red Wings would sign that is left after today's busy July 1st.

The Red Wings have 3 guys signed for the next 4 years in Stuart, Rafalski, and Kronwall. Put those three with the guys that are signed for the next 2 years, Lidstrom, Lilja, Lebda, and Meech. Then toss in Quincey, Ericsson, and Pyatt and the Red Wings don't need anymore defensemen at all. Once you look at the offense the only real pressing need is to sign Filppula and then sign a Franzen and Zetterberg next year along with deciding if you want to bring back Hudler and Sammuelson, the Wings are pretty set offensively as well.

Which leads me to believe that the Red Wings will either make a huge splash and land one of the big three, Sundin, Hossa, or Jagr, or they could just wait till later and pick a guy who is hungry for the cup but won't cost a lot. If they do the later, then they will have a ton of money to spend at the trade deadline to not only make a trade with what everyone needs, good defensemen, but also have a bunch of cap space.

The Red Wings are rumored to be looking to sign Bertuzzi. If they do that, I think he will go for around $1.5 a year. He understands the way things work in Detroit. He will either come to the Wings for that amount of money to win the cup or else.

It has been a good first day of the Free Agency period. It could be an interesting July 2nd as well.
