I am just going to throw this out but do you think Carter wants to sign here. In the this past stretch where injuries have run rampant though the lineup Carter has been asked to play huge minutes in various different roles. If Richards doesn't get hurt its more then likely Carter would be relegated back to 3rd center status and get the minutes and linemates of a 3rd line center. Which leads me to think that there is a possibility Carter may wish to explore his options and end up in a place where he is the top dog and the budding young star rather then the second fiddle role he currently plays to Richards.

Also judging on some of the offer sheets given out last summer if his negotiations reach July, 1 I think he will be in line for a nice payday that the Flyers may not be able to match. Everybody wants Hatcher and Kappanen to retire but the fact of the matter is both are under contract for next season and Kappanen is strapped with the all too familiar NTC. Say if Carter is offered a Penner like deal at a 4.25 cap hit along with Umberger who I will ballpark around 2 million. With around 6 million of the off season money going to those 2 it doesn't leave much to upgrade our d with 2 regulars needing to be resigned or replaced in Jones and Smith.

I think more or less it is going to come down to Carter deciding if he would want to take a lesser role and most likely less money then he could make on the market to stay here with a good young core who has a legitimate chance at the cup in upcoming years.

it would be nice to get rid of briere too and really free up some space... but in all seriousness we should take that 6 mill and offer it to Weber

I think Carter is too young to be that concerned about being THE guy on a team. The ice time thing has been blown out of proportion. Briere doesn't even average a minute more than Carter per game. Additionally, the Flyers young core seems to be very close knit and Carter has said he loves it here and didn't want to leave when rumors were swirling around the deadline. If they were able to sign both Carter and Umbie for around $6 mill combined that, should be fine. The cap is expected to rise again and some are predicting as much as a $5 mill hike. I doubt he even sees restricted free agency.

I think Carter resigns with Philly, but likely only a 2 or 3 year deal so that he can cash in in a few years. Smith will likely be gone, Hatcher is there until his deal expires, and I might guess that Kap will retire, which will open up his salary. In his dealings so far, Homer has proven himself and you can bet that he is a man with a plan. Carts is a 3-3.5 mil a yr player at the moment and I would guess he would be happy with a 3 yr deal with something like 2.75, 3.25, 3.75 with some attainable bonus'.

I wonder if Homer will try to do a Richards type deal and try to get him signed very long term. There's no doubt they'll find the money, whether through trades or simply sending players to the Phantoms to clear up cap space. I can even see Gagne being moved this offseason. Too many top level forwards.

carter will sign... i really think that richards is a second line centre and that briere needs to be set to the role of winger (its obvious that he cannot defensively handle centre responsibilities)... knuble will be i believe 37, but being a massive force on the pp makes him likely trade bait come the offseason.. Possible line combination for 2008-2009:1) gagne-carter-lupul2) briere-richards-jvr or giroux (depending on which comes up) 3)3) Hartnell-umberger-upshall4 Cote-potulny?- Downiethats just m/o.. could (and probably will) look different pending moves
