-For the last year I've been reading comment after comment regarding what the oilers need to do to improve and take the next step. "We need to get tougher" "Top 6 forward, #1 Dman and 2 bottom 6 gritty vets with size" "Were not going to be able to this and that because we wont move our younger core players". -For me, going into next...

Flyers 1st Round Options

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
With the draft only 8 days away (!) I'm sure we are all wondering what our Fly Guys will be doing with their first-round pick. Will they draft by need (defenseman, big-bodied forward?) or will they opt to go with their traditional "best player available" approach? We won't really know the answer to this for a little over a week, but it's still fun to speculate! I put ...

NHL Entry Draft 2013

Posted Tuesday | Comments 3
Everytime around this time of the year, I spend each of my days (and most of their hours) going through what the Edmonton Oilers are going to do on draft day and who they should select. The Edmonton Oilers, unlike the last 3 years are unfortunatley not in a position to pick the best possible player available in the draft and will rely on the selections on 6 teams (one b...
Hey all, I am back with another blog. I hope you enjoy it and feel free to follow me on Twitter @NewfieMikey The Oilers had an interesting day at the Draft, MacT was in on a lot of players but did something we Oiler fans are quite used to...Got close to but didn't land a number of immediate roster players. Oilers sign Nurse, Why?

Posted Monday | Comments 0
Well the Oilers made a bizarre move today by signing Darnell Nurse today to a 3 year entry level deal. Nurse is a few years away from the NHL so why would you sign him now? A team doesn't have to sign one of their draftees until 2 years after they're drafted. Or pretty much when they're done Junior. The only reason a team would sign a player before the 2 years are up i...
During the past 48 hours, as crazy trade rumours surrounding Travis Hamonic have arisen, a name that has been used as a potentially interesting target for the Islanders is Darnell Nurse. Would I make that deal? Never, and this is why: Darnell Nurse this summer was a little overshadowed (tough for a guy who could dunk on Shaq) by the lottery win, and the eventual draftin...

There has been copious amounts of digital ink wasted discussing the Andrej Sekera injury and what issues it will cause the Oilers at the start of the year. One player in particular has an opportunity to prove he is a top 4 defenseman. Next up in this series of reasonable expectations is Darnell Nurse. When Nurse was drafted 7th overall in 2013 many pundits believed the ...

RFA Negotiations

Posted Wednesday | Comments 10
Before the Oilers draft 9th overall on June 22nd, before they make any UFA signings on July 1st the team needs to take care of signing the RFA players. This is all the RFA players the Oilers have that currently have NHL contracts for the purpose of this blog I will not be discussing AHL level deals. Whether the Oilers choose to resign Kyle Platzer or Ben Betker will hav...
