I was going to right earlier today about the exact same crap as before, to old lots of talent even more NTC, at the end of the day the team lives and dies with iggy. I think it can be agreed that this group of players isn't the right group to get it done, and will be together for awhile thanks to the aforementioned NTC's.
I think its time to trade Iginla (gasp unthinkable) the bottom line is he does not play well for Brent Sutter. I think they finally have the coach(s) in place to get the team to high heights, provided they by into the system.
So here is my step by step plan for the organization to get out of the hole.
Step 1. higher new GM let it be his team, he has a higher chance of getting guys to waive NTC's
Who would you trade for iggy? Who has the assets to trade for iggy?
My ideal trading partner would be Boston, they're cup contender who fell apart in the playoffs last year, Iginla is still one of the great leaders in the game, and plays well in the playoffs. Boston has the added advantages of: 1. lots of good young players, 2. lots of skilled centers.... the one thing Iggy has been missing! Krejci, Bergeron Savard should he ever come back....
What i'd want for iggy in return Seguin, Lucic, Colborne, and johnny boychuck and the toronto 1st rounder. In exchange for Iginla, Tanguay, Ian white and Adam Pardy.
Iginla is not a rental player he has 2 years left, meaning your getting more for him. Boston also needs help on the D-end, (white is a solid offensive D Man which Boston is missing, and pardy is a very affordable 6-7th dman.
Immediate roster after trade
Hagman Stajan Bourque
Lucic Jokinen Seguin
Glencross Backlund Moss
(whoever is in the rotation for the game on the 4th)
Reggie Boychuck
Gio Sarich
Jay Bo Staios
Overhaul number 2 Reggie or jay bo to buffalo for RW Zach Kassian, he is going to be one of the next great power forwards hands down and D John Boyd in the WHL.
Step 3: get Michael and Mark Stone out of the pheonix system, Mark is among the league leaders in the WHL and anyone who saw the Hitmen play in the past few years know's exactly why Stone would be so good on the team.
step 4: Aquire the rights to Quinton Howden from Flordia good two way player with a wrist shot, i forgot to menchen he's a solid 6'3.
the ideal hope is that you can fuse in enough skill from other teams to fully cement what the flames already have. The roster in 5 years.
R. Howse Backlund Seguin (Just love the thought of a pure skill line, think Sedins passing)
Lucic Colborne Kassian Size size size and more size goals will be had by all, colborne seting up in the middle beaut!
Howden ? yet to be drafted Nemisz Solid two way line capable of putting up goals of there own.
Ferland Patterson Bouma, Banucks, Watt. The character line enough bash smash and tounge lash to throw anyone off there game.
On to D
Giordano Erixon It'll be Gios team really steps up on D, potential for a solid shutdown line
Negrin Stone what more can you ask for in your 2nd line, size skill character and a howetzer on the point.
Brodie Seabrook minituraize and increase skill and skating and more skill
Goaltending
Yes one day kipper will give up his throne and pass it along, fortunatly it looks like there may be predicesors.
Irving leads the AHL in wins this season and is top 10 in most stats.
Karlsson lots of potential for the big guy.
Otno could be the next great goalie out of finalnd but still to soon to tell.
