Welcome to my first blog! Hopefully I will bring a fresh perspective to your Buzz experience.
Here is what I promise. I will spell check my blog. I will speak from experience, in what I know and not how I can impress you. I am not an insider, don't pretend to know all the players nick names and if I don't won't disrespect the player by giving him a new one. I won't share my music interests with you and pretend it has something to do with hockey. I don't have access to the locker room so I won't tell you who I think is important in the room.
I have been a hockey fan for almost 50 years. Was a Canadian follower until the Sabres were born and when they were I became a season ticket holder over 40 years ago. I never played the game at any level other than the street but I have been an athlete all my life and have coached sports at the NCAA div I level. I have also been blessed to have gotten to know many Sabres of the past on a personal level so what I share won't be someone else's story.
So what is it I miss?
I miss rabbit ears. Turning, twisting, trying to focus my black and white TV to pick up Hockey Night in Canada. Wrapping foil around the antenna to try and do better. Catching glimpses of my beloved Habs in the days of 6 teams. Only to lose them as the signal faded.
I miss the old AHL. The Buffalo Bisons winning the Calder cup the last year of their existence. Great players like Guy Trottier, Gerry Oulette, Terry Crisp, Gilles Villemure and coached by the shadow himself, Fred Shero. The brawls against their hated rival the Cleveland Barons and the Glover Brothers.
I miss great hockey lines. There are great players in this league today but those talents are not accompanied by memorable line mates and memorable monikers. Of course the French Connection leads the pack for any Sabres fan but what about the Rangers GAG line, the Kings Triple Crown line or the Penguins Sky line. Are there any recognizable threesomes in today's game.
Hope you enjoyed the virgin cruise. More to Come!!
Nice job
Thanks Cabin
Nice. Keep them coming.
RPG line. (perry-getz-ryan). and there was the cash line (spezza, heatley, alfredsson). just off the top of my head
How about Philly's Legion of Doom line or the old Red Wing Production Line.
Nice little retro blog
I agree, takes me back to when I first started watching. Thanks
Not nearly as prolific, but Devils fans will remember the Crash line (Holik, McKay, Peluso) or the EGG line (Elias, Gomez, Gionta). Here is a link to line nicknames:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ice_hockey_line_nicknames
