In the first cheer-worthy move of the day, the Wings have brought back Mikael Samuelsson. Again, I’ve already said that I liked Monster’s signing, but he’s more of a stocking stuffer since I expect Joey MacDonald to put up a serious fight for the number two gig. Okay, so this guy is probably a stocking stuffer, too, but let’s call him a fan favorite. I liked Samuelsson in his first stint with the Wings, and I was excited to see him on the market again. I think the price may be a little high, but looking at some of the contracts being signed, it’s probably in line with what he would get elsewhere.
In four seasons with the Wings he scored 67 goals and tallied 92 assists for 159 points in 278 games. Since then, 62 goals, 72 assists for 124 points in 203 games. He may not be the name we’ve been most looking forward to seeing on a Wings’ jersey, but here’s hoping he regains his scoring touch and that I’m just as happy about this at the end of the season as I am right now.
And before I could even finish writing up how excited I was for Samuelsson to come back, the Wings announce the signing of Jordin Tootoo. Okay Kenny, you don’t want to be the Broad Street Bullies, and I get that. No one is asking you to give up all your talented wingers for a bunch of goons and enforcers, but if you take a look at the teams that moved past the first round, they had something we didn’t. No one on the Wings really got under Nashville’s skin, and in the end, we paid for that with an early summer. Jordin Tootoo can provide that grit and aggravation that can hopefully see us playing into June next year. Hopefully, Kenny can continue on this trend by signing another certain someone away from Nashville as well.
