Bergevin Doing It The Right Way

I find it funny how people are saying that Habs gm Marc Bergevin didn`t do enough on Free Agent Frenzy Canada Day July, 1 2012. Bergevin addressed the need of "team guys" and "gritty players" by adding Colby Armstrong, Francis Bouillon and Brandon Prust. Let`s look at what else Bergevin has done since being hired.
A list of hirings by Bergevin since taking office : Rick Dudley, Scott Mellanby, Michel Therrien, Gerard Gallant, Clement Jodoin, J.J. Daigneault, Sylvain Lefebvre, a couple of scouts, Ethan Moreau as a western scout to name one, and finally the hiring of Martin Lapointe and Patrice Brisebois along with the resigning of Larry Carriere.
The office for which Bergevin was hired was under staffed and lacking any sense of direction, Bergevin has now fixed that problem which was a major one to say the least.
Marc Bergevin also let Head of player procurement Trevor Timmins run wild and finally be able to do his job without a black cloud of uncertainty above him.
Next there where the resigning of players Travis Moen, Ryan White, Alexei Emelin, and Petteri Nokelainen.
The letting go of Matheiu Darche, Andreas Engqvist and Brad Staubitz.
Signing premier netminder Carey Price to a six year 39 million dollar deal.
In other words Marc Bergevin has rectified mass under staffing, new coaches, assistants, new coaches in Hamilton, great picks at the draft including future Habs number 1 center and NHL star Alex Galchenyuk, has resigned or went to FA market to sign toughness and heart players, yet still some would say he hasn`t done anything or not much of mention?
Could the Montreal Canadiens use a star scorer the likes of Bobby Ryan, Rick Nash or Zach Parise, absolutely, is it worth potentailly letting go of some future stars in the organization to do so, the jury is still out on that one.
The Habs gm has done everything that needed to be done so far, with the exception of signing or acquiring a sniper LW, and a big shut down d man.
The Habs press conference which was held Monday July 2, 2012, at 17:30 instead of the previous 17:00, 16:30 and 18:00 on July 1 2012 would suggest that the Canadiens were trying to get something done, what it is no-one knows, but one would suggest it wasn`t just to announce the Price signing, as Bergevin looked tired and annoyed at the presser.
Marc Bergevin is taking his time to make sure he does what is needed properly, not in a rush. Taking a 15th place team in the conference, changing the structure of players, mentality of the team and gathering an intelligent staff does not come overnight.
The next moves to come would be the signing of P.K. Subban and filling that LW spot beside center Thomas Plekanec. which I`m sure Bergevin was trying to do on FA day, but fell short.
Marc Bergevin is a smart man, he hired the best people in the right places, got some grit and toughness that the Habs lacked, resigned some players, and is moving forward to work on his team further.
There are a few more pieces missing, but rest assured, Marc Bergevin is doing things the right way.

Good assessment. I will say that while I check the blogs for rumors and trade winds, its almost refreshing to see none. It says to me that Bergevin is methodical and patient and not quick to burn bridges or use media for pressure...unlike some blue and white GM that everyone knows
Nice blog. I think Semin could be brought in a on a 1 year deal. Why not? He works out, re sign him. He doesn't, let him run off to the KHL for all we care.
Thanks Mark and Gator.On the Semin front, I highly doubt he is the kind of player that either Bergevin or Therrien are looking for, they like the physical guys or power forwards, which is good, we could use another. 1 year I would try it, but Semin wouldn`t he is looking long term or KHL.
Nice blog. Agreed on all fronts except for the hiring of Therrien. I would have liked to have seen him go to Crawford. He has certainly solidified a front office that was in shambles. Let's hope he continues his fine work and can get one more top 6 forward in the next couple of months. We have some assets to trade.
Thanks Relic.Seemingly it was a toss up between Therrien and Crawford, perhaps the never ending court battles for Crawford (Bertuzzi) did him in, at least the Habs have a coach that is hard but fair, no extended days off for nothing and especially after losing 5 in a row are coming this year, players had better work their butts off.
Avoid Semin like the plague that he is. The Habs have had enough locker room poison, why add more?
id like for marc to get players like anthony stewart, chris stewart, okposo, Clutterbuck, steve downie or even sean avery.. add couple of those players to your team and your talkin real gritty physical players with character. and im sure you can easily trade Eller and other prospects like Kristo for atleast one of them.
I'd like to see Doan sign with Mtl for a 3 or even 4 year Deal he's a tall guy who would add experience and leadership and not to mention he can score and tally up points I think he'd be a great addition to Montreal. However I also believe just waiting til next year to go after a top player would be a good idea as well with Gomez freeing up 7.5 alone it'd be alot smarter to go after a top player such as; Getzlaf or Perry or fisher or even Hartnell (if they don't resign)
I don't think Semin is a plague Marc lol, He is not a team player though. He has been under Ovechkin's shadow for a while, a short contract with antother team might show off what he can actually do.
I agree defoybrand, Okposo might be a good pick up, Chris Stewart as well, Anthony would be good, but it would cost too much to acquire him, Downie was re-signed, however I must disagree on the Avery one though, although a player who can score and play, he was a cancer everywhere he went. I do see your point on the type of players though.
Yes Mills51, Doan would be the right fit for Montreal, but 4-5 years is too long a term for him at 35 years old, especially at the amount he wants per year, unless the salary is 4 mil.The Gomez situation will hopefully be resolved in terms of a trade to a team which needs to make the cap, or being sent down to the minors. The Habs can over over the cap by 7 mil until the season begins, not worried there.
Great blog love reading it, what do you think about PK Subban, I read alot of trade rumors involving him I would hate to see him go but I really feel he needs to tone it down a bit, and rip it more from the point. I hope they can sign him for 6 years like Price and he can tone it down just a little bit
Rumors are rumors, he has value so it`s normal his name pops up. 6 years at a reasonable rate would be advantageous for the Habs if he breaks out within the next two years. As far as bringing it down a notch, he will, but don`t forget he was a little annoyed at being held back last year and his attitude is what the fans love, plus what drives opponents crazy, he`ll rebound this year.
