If you grew up a hockey fan in the 90's theres an extremely high chance you watched the Emilio Estevez led Mighty Ducks trilogy from Disney. In these movies they went from a brat pack of kids to state champions to World Junior Games champions to the JV hockey team who beat the varsity team in this be all-end all of prep hockey in Minnesota. While I loved these movies as a kid and will still continue to make jokes and enjoy them they were awful from an actualy hockey standpoint but that didn't matter, I mean Wayne Gretzky was in this. It was the jokes, side stories and overall goofiness of the teams in them that made them great to viewers.
I recently watched D2 and was beginning to wonder what players and coaches from today's NHL match up with their Mighty Duck counterparts. So here is my list of who from the NHL would play the characters in D2: The Mighty Ducks if there was a reboot made.
The Ducks were led by their Captain Charlie Conway, even though he was never named this until the final 5 minutes of D3 but that's another issue. The NHL player who could best fit Conway's role would have to be Blackhawks captain Jonathon Toews. The dude does't always light the lamp but he makes big plays, and does whatever his team needs him to do so they will come out with the W. Conway gave away his roster spot to give his team an added edge from the bench when they needed it most.
Next up is leading scorer Adam Banks. Cake-eater as they called him (Minnesota term for rich, snobby, brat) will go to none other than the NHL's poster boy Cindy, I mean Sidney Crosby. The guy scores in bunches and has such pure talent but is overshadowed by his constant whining and "embellishing." Banks comes up clutch in the shootout like Crosby did in the '10 Olympics but enough with the whining just play hockey.
Resident tough guy Fulton Reed, who has a rocket for a slap shot will be played by none other than Shea Weber from the Nashville Predators. He fits the role of the character almost too well. Hammer for a slap shot and a flat-out nasty player to go up against. Who wouldn't love to see Weber come out for every game in a skull and cross bones bandana and eye black?
The goalie Goldbergh is from Philly and a bit of an enigma at times with his play. You never quite understand why he's as good as he can be or as bad as he's been seen, he is also known for his humor and sayings in the movie. Can it be anyone other than Ilya Bryzgalov to play the little South Philly goalie. 24/7 showed a side of Bryz Flyers fans would like to forget but after his strong play in March and early April it kind of forgiven.
Les Averman is the team goofball. He scores but you never know how or even why a player this goofy looking is one of the teams best players. The honors of Les Averman go to one man, Scott Hartnell. This was another easy choice due to Hartnell's goofy personality and often goofy play but at the end of the day he gets his job done and his team his happy with his performance.
The "Minnesota Miracle Man" Gordon Bombay was originally played by Emilio Estevez. He was a semi-pro hockey player who never made it to the NHL like he had such high hopes and dreams. This honor can go to a few coaches in the NHL but I feel Dan Bylsma is best suited to be the next Gordon Bombay. He has done a tremendous job in coaching Pittsburgh as a former mid-year replacement and even regrettebly led them to a championship. He is a good coach with a deep sense of the game and really undertsands his players.
Lets flip the script a bit and look at team Iceland, the USA's rival in this movie. Team captain Gunnar Stahl is a force to be reckoned with in this film. He literally scores at will and makes his oppossing forces cringe whenever he touches the puck. The player to play him, and not just due to similarity in looks, would be Steven Stamkos. Stamkos can light the lamp at any given moment and completely turn the game. Opposing teams hate trying to match up with Stamkos because of how dangerous and how hard to shut down he is.
Iceland's coach Wolf "The Dentist" Stansson was a former NHL player who played one season in which he punched out a coach and knocked out more opposing players teeth than scored goals. This one is going to John Tortorella. Screams at anyone within earshot, doesn't care who hears and is just an angry coach. Pretty good fit to me.

Solid read, except for your bias against Sidney Crosby. It's a known fact that when he broke into the league he had a tendancy to complain and whine, but that diminished over the years and if you watched Sid over the last few years it doesn't exist any more than any other star in the league. Your Crosby bias is comparable to Habs fans holding on to the Cup victory almost 20 years ago. Otherwise, great idea it was fun to read.
hey trolleytrack u and the cupless Sens should leave the habs out of thisbut yes great read!
See what I mean.
Like a senators fan should talk...worst atmosphere in that arena in all of Canada, no history behind the team and a place for my friends and I to go when we can't get tickets to habs games cuz theyre sold out and way more expensive. We go to sens games and you would think its a home game for the habs...a sad bunch those sens fans. At least the leafs have some history to them.
lol, looks like your 2 for 2 trollertracks. Seriously Habs fans... It's a trap! :D
My favorite movie of all time. I like your picks too. Nice blog. Here are a couple additions I'd like to add:Julie "The Cat" Gaffney is played by Roberto Luongo. Ken Woo is played by .. well .. any of the Canucks except Bieska because they are ballerinas on the ice. Dean Portman can be played by George Parros.
