"Avalanche - Thats That."

With the St. Louis Blues having huge interest in Paul Stastny what will Colorado do?

When it comes down to it, the loss of a Centre is not really that big a deal to Colorado, they have an unbelievable amount of depth that no other team in the NHL has. Stastny would be a huge blow speaking of chemistry between Landeskog, MacKinnon and himself, but not something that cant be formed with another player.

Is looking for a replacement that big of a deal? I don't think so. I believe the Avalanche could benefit long term by the loss of Paul. This would free up between 5-6 million that would go to Paul, giving the Avalanche the 1-2 million extra to sign O'Reilly long term. It also gives them options to sign a winger that could be far more beneficial than a centre playing wing.

Let us stop hopping Paul stays an start looking at what we could sign? A few wingers are out there but they want the kind of money that Stastny wants so maybe not so much of an option with out cap space changes. Trades may be a larger picture for Colorado especially with speculation they could be interested in a guy like Loui Eriksson. Who would they trade?Well Boston has made a few trades with Colorado for Defensemen, most notably Johnny Boychuk. Maybe they are looking at a Stefan Elliott, Duncan Siemens, Chris Bigras? I personally wouldn't want to give any of them up but if we want to stay in "structure" Elliott is first to go. Eriksson for Elliot and a conditional 1st round pick? Conditions being Avs making it to lets say the second round of the playoffs.

Honestly this feels like a far better option in the long term than praying Stastny stays for x amount of dollars for a 2-3 year deal that sees him leave any way. Only reason I say 2-3 years is because if Stastny were to take a pay cut for it to benefit him short term would make sense, try us out if we lose he goes if we win he got what he wants and goes.

In all, making a trade for a winger with an already set salary for a couple years would be far better than signing a guy that wants way more than can be given. Eriksson trade would open up cap space for Boston that they are in serious need of - especially if we trade prospects with low end money contracts. In the draft Colorado takes a few wingers, making Brendan Lemieux a decent choice (unless there are "better" left) in the first round and signing a decent UFA defensemen.

Congrats to; Patrick Roy, Ryan O'Reilly, Nathan MacKinnon and Semyon Varlamov on their nominations at the NHL Awards and for a 3 of 4 trophies captured.

I like the idea of adding to Eriksson to the mix minus Stastny. I personally would not give Boston anything more than Elliott

I like the idea of adding Loui too. I would rather trade for a player rather that over spend on someone else thats a desperate attempt to replace Stastny if he goes.1st, Elliott, PAP/Hishon is the biggest package I would want to see go for a proven NHL vet under contract.

Elliott, PAP, and a lesser draft pick(maybe a 3rd or 4th) is what I would offer. Loui has serious concussion problems. That being said, I do like what he can do and he was GREAT on the stars. Boston has a system that his style of play does not excel in. I believe he would thrive with Mackinnon and Landy.

Can we perhaps get Boychuk back in that deal?
