Michael Peca yearns to be a Sabre, and the Sabres need a center who can win faceoffs, kill penalties and add leadership. I guess the question is, should the Sabres sign Peca or wait and see if there is a younger, healthier center that can be had later on after the arbitration hearings are complete?
Does Darcy Regier believe it is time for the younger players such as Derek Roy, Thomas Vanek, Max Afinoganov, Tim Connolly and Jason Pominville to start being the leaders. Perhaps the infusion of Michael Peca will lead to him being the voice and face of the franchise and stunt the leadership growth of the younger core of players.
Michael Peca, when healthy, would add a lot to the Sabres at a very reasonable price. The questions: Is he healthy, has Darcy gotten over the year long holdout and forced trade and, ultimately, will the Sabres bring back one of their most popular players over the past decade?
I can't see how they can't do it! Even for a year, he would input leadership where it can be soaked up by the young-ins. Don't get me wrong: I like Miller and Soupy, but there's not that savvy, long in the tooth kind of leader on this team anymore. Teppo does not fit that role. I see him as a quiet leader, who prolly takes guys aside and shows them something different when he sees they need a little help. I don't see him as a voice/pressence that can lead. Darcy, let the by-gones be by-gones and bring him in on the cheap for a year!
Gil, you stole my thunder. I was going to blog on this issue my self. I think if Peca is man enough to put the past behind him I think Darcy should do the same. Peca is exactly wht this teams needs right now. But only under the right circumstances though. He needs to be a mentor. teach these younger players like you mentioned how to lead by example on
I would love to see Peca back with the Oil...
Avsnumber1fan makes a lot of good points!!!! HAHAHAHA I would love Peca back on the Sabres. He wants to be back in Buffalo so what is Darcy waiting for??? I know he wants to see the players teams let go in arbitration but Peca would come cheap and wouldn't take up much cap space.
What then heck is the problem with avsnumber1fan? I was excited to see 86 posts and then his repeated deep thoughts. :)
the only problem i have is that the sabres think that they have all the tools in house but they dont have a leader besides miller. they think that this team is good but they have not addressed the reason why the team lost last year and that was overall toughness and peca if healthy is the answer to that question. if you go out there and get mike cammalari like ive been hearing its just adding another connolly or roy to this team and no toughness.
agreed metman. I like Peca to help solve the problem. among others I like Ekman too (though he's a bit of a pest). without Drury I think Peca has proven he can fill crucial spots on the PK, faceoffs, as well as most other situations.
