Hockey eve is upon us, trade rumors surrounding young stars are circulating, some rumors leave us wondering what is credible? One of these young stars who has reportedly requested a trade is Pierre Luc-Dubois. Dubois has signed himself a brand new contract and still wants out. There are many teams in on the Dubois sweepstakes, lets analyze two potential destinations for PLD.
The first team that makes the most sense is the Winnipeg Jets, hear me out. Winnipeg has a young star in Patrik Laine, a guy who can be a legit 40 goal scorer in the right scenario. Winnipeg doesn't have that centerman behind Scheifele to create a powerful 1-2 punch. If Laine can be placed properly in the Blue Jackets top-6, you could create the goal scorer in Laine that he was touted to be. The return scenario would need to include other assets going both ways. This could include draft picks or even guys like Roslovic who is from Columbus. However, Winnipeg is in a weird spot currently, it's hard to predict where they'll end up placing in the North division with their current roster. Possibly shaking things up to add a guy like PLD could be beneficial for his career and the Jets roster. With the Jets losing (G) Eric Comrie and (D) Luca Sbisa on waivers, the Jets may be looking to add another goalie to their system. A trade may satisfy that possible desire to add possible forward depth and an extra goaltender.
What could a possible WPG/CBJ trade look like?
CBJ receives (F) Patrik Laine, (F) Jack Roslovic, and (D) Sami Niku [Maybe a draft pick alongside the players?]rnWPG receives (F) Pierre Luc-Dubois, and (G) Matiss Kivlenieks [Maybe a draft pick alongside as well?]rnrnBeing realistic, it may take a bit more to grab Laine and Roslovic in the same trade. It's not off the table, but it's likely not going to end being a Laine for Dubois 1 for 1.
The second team that I can see landing PLD is the New York Rangers. The Rangers have the assets to land PLD, but what are they willing to give in return? That's one of the questions that come up while attempting to put together a possible trade scenario that satisfies both teams involved. Dubois could pull in a lot for Columbus, the return could be adding a right-side defenseman, grabbing Anthony DeAngelo from the Rangers could solidify Columbus's right side. While there's no question that the Rangers have an already deadly top-6, they added Alexis Lafreniere which will only strengthen their core. Kaapo Kakko could also have a big year for the Rangers, that is a big what-if scenario looming the franchise. Being realistic with Kakko, if the Rangers manage to pull off a trade acquiring PLD, they would have to give up one of their top 6 guys. This could be a guy like Pavel Buchnevich alongside Phillip Di Giuseppe.
What could this trade scenario between NYR/CBJ look like?
NYR receives (F) Pierre Luc-Dubois [there could also be another prospect and/or a draft pick involved]
CBJ receives (F) Pavel Buchnevich, (F) Phillip Di Giuseppe, (D) Anthony DeAngelo, and a *possible* 2021 1st round draft pick. I so desperately want to add a guy like Chris Kreider to this trade idea, but I don't think Kreider wants to waive his NMC playing in New York.
I have thought about four other possible destinations that include, but aren't limited to; Ottawa, Dallas, Carolina, and Colorado. These explanations would be shorter, they would be harder to analyze and form a trade that suits both team's needs. As we sit on these trade rumors surrounding PLD, it's fun to look at the possible outcomes of said trades.
PLD could be moved or the club could hold onto this assist and let coach go? What is the consensus in the looker room right now?
