It's been about a week since this whole Dustin Penner thing came about, but it feels like I've read about 1000 articles on this subject all calling for Kevin Lowe to step down, or he's desperate etc. The fact of the matter is (and i'm not an oiler fan) that Kevin did what he needed to do to make his team better. Did he pay too much? Probably. Is it joe averages fan's money? Nope...
Is this a worse deal than when St. Louis grabed Shanny from New Jersey and had to give up Scott Stevens who went on to head Jersey to Cup after Cup? Nope, not even close.

I don't know why more NHL GM's don't do this, as Kevin put it "Im not in the business of making friends" as far as I'm concerned a team with lots of cap space should be trying to make life harder for other teams. I thought a team like Boston should have tried to sign Emery for about 5 mill a year and either make Ottawa match to keep there goalie and have a harder time signing Spezza and Heatley next year, or Ottawa doesn't match get some draft picks which maybe one or two would make the NHL maybe, and have no goalie for next year.

Now that this situation is resolved I hope this is the last we have to hear about offer sheets etc, there will be more next year and i'm sure we will all have to wade through the never ending bad articles about how bad a deal it is, but the Oilers gave up no NHL players from the roster and added a young, good one, and in my opinion that makes the team better.... and I always thought that was the point of being an NHL GM.

Good Blog, hopefully this will be the last we hear of this. I think a lot of people will be surprised as to how much the owners in Edmonton like K. Lowe. There is not much chance that he will be run out of town at this time.

The reason why more gms dont do this is because teams have a responsibility to their fans. Teams dont want to lose fan favorites for PR reasons. I think what Lowe did was not the right thing to do, but I think it makes it ok that he did it to Brian Burke because he is a good example of someone who does not do what is right

We'd take the picks in a heartbeat and use the very capable Gerber. Boston's got enough on their plate to start worrying about poaching.
