Fashion 101, NHL Style – Part 2

It is time for the second edition in my series of blogs about the new NHL jerseys. For those who still have not seen the new jerseys:

This time I am turning my critical eye towards the Northwest division.
Calgary Flames:
The new Flames jerseys are quite similar to their old ones with the colours and logo being the same. Like a lot of these new jerseys, they have the laces at the collar, which I have said previously that I like. Another thing I like is the thin stripes at the bottom edge of the jersey. Adds a little extra visual interest without being too obvious. The main thing I do not like is the Canada and Alberta flags on the shoulders. The Alberta flag stands out so much and looks out of place. Nice idea in principle, does not look the greatest in reality. Overall, a very nice looking jersey.
Colorado Avalanche:
Some subtle changes to the new Avs jerseys featuring the same colours and logo. I prefer the away jerseys to the home jerseys; the stripes down the shoulder looks better with the burgundy and white compared to the burgundy and blue. One feature I do not like that is on both jerseys is the piping that starts at the collar and runs down the torso. I prefer the piping on the home jerseys better because it prevents the dark colours from overwhelming the jersey. Overall, still nice jerseys.
Edmonton Oilers:
Some changes were made, and for the most part I do not like them. I think there is too much dark blue with little orange or white on the home jerseys, and too much white with too little blue and orange on the away jerseys. Several teams seem to have this same issue. It seems that if one colour dominates too much, the jerseys end up looking too plain and/or too dark. These Oilers jerseys have the same piping down the torso as the Avs jerseys have and still do not like them here. A weird feature of the new Oilers jersey is the stripes at the elbow. Maybe it is just the picture, but why do not go all the way around the arm? Looks odd.. Overall, I do not like these jerseys but they are not the worst of the new jerseys.
Minnesota Wild:
The Wild also kept their new jerseys very similar to their old ones. I was never a fan of the Christmas-theme colours, but they keep the logos the same (one of the few teams that has two main logos). I prefer the away jerseys since the white detracts from the Christmas-ness of the home jerseys, and the stripes at the bottom keep the jersey from being too plain like the Sens and Leafs jerseys. As for the home jerseys, besides the dominance of red and green, I do not like the green portion of the arm; think it would be nicer if the shoulder/arm was the same as the away jerseys. The home jerseys do have the laces at the collar that I do like, so that saves it for me… Overall, the away jerseys are nicer, and the home jerseys are decent.
Vancouver Canucks:
Now these jerseys really caused a lot of buzz when they first came out, with many people disliking them immensely. Unfortunately, I am on their side. The Canucks were smart and went back to the retro blue/green/white colours, but stuck with the whale logo instead of going back to the rink and stick logo. They added “Vancouver” over the logo and kept the stripes on the bottom. Think all Canucks fans know what city their team is in, so why add “Vancouver”? Several people suggested that it is in preparation for the 2010 Olympics; the Canucks are hoping that tourists will buy it as a souvenir, I guess. With the numbers and letters on the front, these jerseys are just too busy. Guess they could have added laces at the collar.. (Seriously, how much stuff can you stick on one jersey?). Taking away the stripes at the bottom could have prevented this if they really wanted to keep the “Vancouver”. Overall, I do not like these jerseys at all; they had the potential to be very nice but it was goofed up.
Summary
Unfortunately, for fashion fanatics, the Northwest Division did not make out as well as the Northeast. The Flames have the nicest jerseys by quite a margin with the Avs and Wild tied for second. The Oilers jerseys are next with the Canucks stuck in last place. Bet you Oilers and Canucks fans are happy that jersey designs have nothing to do with the actual standings..?

great job I agree with what you said about the flame sweater
yeah i'm less then impressed witht he Oilers sweater, I would have much preferred to keep the old ones, with few minor tweaks to maybe the arm bands, even that i'm not sure needed to happen
I really like the patches on the flames jersey. Its classy and it is different than anything ive seen.

Nice work again, Fluff!!! I agree 100% about the Alberta flag... nice idea, but doesn't work. I don't mind the Oil jerseys so much... coulda used stripes at the bottom maybe. And YES, Vancouver tried to do too much. I believe the "Vancouver" is in homage to the old Vancouver Millionaires, who won the Stanley Cup in 1915. If they had switched the shoulder (rink and stick) and main (orca) logos, it would've been okay, I think.
Oh Fluffy!!!Nice blog! I have to disagree w/ you. The new Canuck jerseys are starting to grow on people and as a result, are selling like hot cakes. In fact I just bought one for me and my little terror. Nicely written blog!!
Hey Fluff, as I understand it, the Canucks put "Vancouver" over the whale as a homage to the Vancouver Millionaires and (I think) the pre-NHL Canucks uniforms. The blue home jersey is okay but like you say the white one just looks a mess...

these guys aren't preforming a fashion show in France....this is hockey, who cares what they are wearing.? Did you see the Pittsburgh Steelers jerseys this weekend? Their jerseys hurt my eyes and they are the most popular team in the most successful North American sport...If the Canucks miss the playoffs, i doubt it'll have anything to do with their awful jerseys.
