The rivalry between the Canucks and Oilers isn't a fierce one, but tonights game felt like a regular season one, except for some scrambly play. A big knock against the Canucks play tonight was stupid penalties. They took 6 in the first period alone.
Henrik to Daniel. Thats a sentance Canucks fans are going to hear a lot of this coming campaign. We heard it a lot tonight and we heard it early when Henrik set up Daniel for the nights first goal.
An early power play saw Sheldon Souray do what he does best. Blasting a one-timer from the point, that went top corner past Schneider. Now that Souray is an Oiler, the canucks can't afford to take pentalties against them.
What the Canucks need is more offence and Ryan Kesler is just the man to do it. He showed that tonight when breaking in on a two one and snapping a wrister by Mathieu Garon to give the Canucks a 2-1 lead. He than feathered a beautiful pass to Mason Raymond, who fought off a check from behind to slide it by Garon.
Defensively for the Canucks it was an average night. No one really stood out. They were very good on the penalty kill, however. Only allowing one power play goal, by the Oilers, who had a plethera of chances, but as the game progressed the defence got sloppy and the Oilers potted two goals to and tied it up 4 - 4 late in the game.
Even though he let two goals in, Cory Schneider looked pretty solid in his first pre-season start. He was replaced halfway through the second by Curtis Sanford, who was looking to improve over his play in Anaheim. Sanford did let in two goals, but they were almost unstoppable.

One of the Oilers big off season aquisitions, Dustin Penner, was a ghost. He had no shots on net and no noticeable hits. If the anncouncers hadn't mentioned his name I wouldn't have known he was playing. It was disapointing because I expected, even if he does play for the opposition.
Zack Stortini and Zack Fitzgerald had the first fight of the night. Stortini started with a huge rabbit punch. The two exchanged blows for another minute before it was broken up. Nod to Stortini.
Mike Brown and Jean-Francois Jacques fought near the end of the second and it was spirited battle. It was one of those fights were you just knew someone was going to be knocked out. Unfortunately no one was, but Brown landed the most shots so he gets the nod.
The big story of the night was Brad Isbisters game winning goal with just 2.5 seconds left on the clock. Sourays point shot was blocked and Ryan Kesler pushed it past him to Isbister. Coulombe than jumped out of the box to make the two on one. Isbister went down the right side, and much like Kesler earlier in the night, snapped it glove side for the game winner.

Heart-breaker. Couldn't freakin' believe it, especially after the Oilers carried the play in the third-period.
Oil-fan get used to that re: Penner. I know it's only pre-season but he has stretches where he plays like he's 5'-8" and about 170. Hopefully there is someone on the roster who can put a foot up his butt more often than not.
Penner was fine. He was definitely not the problem. The only line that did anything 5-on-5 was Sanderson-Cogliano-Brodziak, and they only got 2 shots themselves.
