...i didn't happen to find the knuble penalty as influential on the game as the riley cote holding penalty.
cote, and all 4:01 of playing time, decided it necessary that he go aggressively into the offensive corner and make an impact on the game. leaving his brain most likely somewhere in philadelphia, took a terrible penalty while the team had momentum, but was unfortunately already down 2-1. hello. mcfly? didn't take long for the lightning to capitalize with their very solid PP to take the game to 3-1. pretty tall order for the flyers on the road.
while in the penalty box they showed a riley cote quote...something along the lines of 'i go out and hit anything i can in hoping to blah blah blah.'
please. a guy like jim dowd goes out there and gives his team a boost with good smart hockey. the league is too fast to be messing around trying to crack people in the offensive zone. if you are going to have a 4th line, then make it an 'energy line' that provides some opportunities with speed and turnovers.
the point is...put a minor leaguer like tolpeka with skills who can use a little nhl seasoning out there and make some plays with eager and dowd.
despite his summer karate lesson, the riley cote experience is a failure.
Agreed. The Flyers have proven that they have guys that are willing to throw down for the team when it's called for and Ben Eager has a regular shift and is there incase things need a little spice. Get rid of the goons!
cote is a bad goon at that. brashear, although useless as well, had speed and could take on the big guys
You have to include Hartnell in taking a bad penalty also. I agree, a terrible play by Cote. But you can't have a young player like Tolpeko playing very little minutes in the NHL. He's better off down in the AHL
I'd freaking rather see Boyd Kane in the lineup than Cote. he can't skate at the NHL level. Not matter how hard he tries, he just can't. He is not a heavy weight either. Nothing personal, he is just not an NHL player. I heard he is very good in the Northeast skate zone C league tho.
Cote is a waste. They are just filling holes until Upshall and Downie are back in the line up.
To make matters worse, the Flyers scored like 2 seconds after the Cote hold. Funny, but watching the game, I was thinking the same thing...this guy is just a penalty kill waiting to happen.
Wow, where are all the "we need a goon" fans? Thats mostly what I heard this summer. I couldnt agree more that Tolpeko or even Kane would be great right now. Whats the difference for their development, we are talking a couple of weeks at most till the injured are back. And lets not pretend like we couldnt use some energy verse Boston (NICE POST!!)
Against some teams like Tampa, you cant play without an enforcer in the lineup. They were taking their liberties at our guys in front of the net as it was. Eager is coming off a concussion (I mean headache). That was a dumb play on Cote's part. But we could have used both Boulerice, Downie and Hatcher last night, along with Cote, imo. Cote has to learn to play it clean. He wasnt the only one to take a stupid penalty. Hartnell's slash on LeCavalier wasnt to bright either. They scored on the PP, too.
Cote is not a heavy weight and honestly, the guy cannot skate to the NHL level. How many hits do you see him throw? Not many, he misses. I'd sooner just have Eager handle the fighting.
Well, you're right there, nastyflyergirl. Cote cant skate worth a darn, but who else do we have right now? Eager is coming off a concussion and didnt even play much. Cote didnt play much either. Next time we play Tampa, I'd prefer we play Biron, Gagne, Upshall, and especially Downie, Boulerice and Hatcher. LeCavalier, Gratton and Tampa's defense, especially O'Brien, were trying to play rough, so we need to counter that with some toughness back at them. I was thinking last night it would be nice to have a big shutdown center like we had in Primeau. We dont really have and we could really use a big shutdown center, especially when playing some of the bigger teams in the league.
