So for those of you who get lost sometimes in trades, I've tried to compile a good list of what Buffalo has given up and then gotten through trades in 2008:
Trade Deadline Day 2008:
Sabres give up:
[20 Games of service from Brian Campbell]
7th round pick in 2008 Entry Draft [later became Drew Daniels (RW)]
Sabres get:
Steve Bernier (RW)
1st round pick (26th overall) in 2008 Entry Draft [later became Tyler Ennis (C)]
July 4th 2008:
Sabres give up:
Steve Bernier
Sabres get:
3rd round 2009 from Vancouver
2nd round 2010 from Vancouver
Sabres give up:
2nd round 2009 (Buf)
2nd round 2010 (Van)
Sabres get:
Craig Rivet (D) signed for 3 full seasons @ 3.5 mil per season
Grand Total:
20 regular season games of Brian Campbell
+ 7th round 2008 Entry Draft pick
+ 2nd round 2009 Entry Draft pick
=
Craig Rivet (D) signed for 3 seasons
+ 3rd round 2009 Entry Draft pick (Van)
+ Tyler Ennis (C) at 26th overall in 2008
Cap Differences:
Yes, I knew some of you would mention the cap price differences in the trade. Brian Campbell had a cap hit of 1.5 per season, and in his last season with Buffalo was on the roster for 146 total days out of 187 max.
1.5 / 187 * 146 = 1.171K used up by Buffalo in 2008 Season
1.5 / 187 * 41 = 328K picked up by San Jose in 2008 Season
Steve Bernier had a cap hit of 1.183 per season, and in his last season with San Jose was on the roster for 146 total days out of 187 max.
1.183 / 187 * 146 = 923K used up by San Jose in 2008 Season
1.183 / 187 * 41 = 259K picked up by Buffalo in 2008 Season
Looks like we managed to save cap space as well (and pay less salary money out) as a result.
Results
Overall, I'd say this was a win-win for Buffalo, a win for Vancouver, and a win-lose for San Jose.
Rivet's awesome... The 5-10 minutes between getting Boyle and trading Rivet I was thrilled, but I am very disappointed to see him leave.
Rivet looks like he can kick some butt, and just doing a YouTube search shows 30 of his 104 Penalty Minutes last year were from fights. I hope he shows Andrew Peters how to really let the fists fly, as Peters has become somewhat of a punching bag in recent years.
From what I watched of Rivet in the playoffs, I really like his game. I'm dumbfounded however why Buffalo wouldn't pay slightly more and at least make an offer for Orpik. Heck, I would have paid for both of them and dump salaray (Max).
Nice job on breaking the trades down, excellent analogy used to show us the differences.
I am really looking forward to the 2008-2009 season. The Sabres are making the right moves; rewarding the hard working players and dumping the sea anchors.
Good post, however, I think we gave both our 2nd round picks for Rivet. This of course could work in a favor if we can turn our ship around quicker than the Nucks.
With all the negative junk being throw out and about on this website by so-called Sabres fans, its good to see something positive....the more I read about Rivet, the more I like him. Bernier had a great debut and a big body and at times late in the season actually used that body to his advantage, BUT, he also seemed to not have that certain jump in his feet at times and we all know the Sabres are all about skating. He could work out well with the Sedin twins...i bet he does better than Pyatt over his career.
You will enjoy rivet punishing players for the sabres.
TSN, NHL.com and Buffalo News are not clear on whether the 2nd round 2010 pick we gave was the Van or Buf pick.
It was our second rounders from 2009 and 2010, and as far as I'm concerned that's cheap. Say all you want about Darcy Regier, but the man certainly knows how to keep a team together. Rivet is a punishing presence and will thrive in our defensive scheme, and will also make a great secondary defenseman on the power play. If we can trade Max for another younger defenseman (Cam Barker, Paul Ranger), we will have a solid D for the next couple years at least.
Great blog. I'm content with the Sabres roster as is for now. I agree with most that another D man should probably be added to the mix, but I'd be content waiting a few months into the season to see where the younger guys are before spending the money to bring someone else in. Also, can we put Max on ebay?
Don't give up on 61 just yet. My prediction is he will start the season with Buffalo. Put Staff with Roy and Vanek and 61 with Connolly and hope that Timmy stays healthy for a change. If not, get rid of both
Not only will Rivet be an excellent physical presence for you guys (and btw he'll drop 'em when need be and picks his fights wisely for the most part), but he'll also provide leadership in your dressing room. When he was injured last season, instead of sitting in the press box he put on a suit and got behind the bench. And he's got a good sense of humor too. :o)
The big question is "Are Rivet and Lalime enough of an improvement to make the Sabres a playoff team?"
They are certainly an improvment over T-bo and Kalinin. Not sure if it will be enough. One more D would be nice though
I would like to see Connelly leave Buffalo before I would Max for the simple reason being Connelly is to injury prone. Granted, as long as Max isn't screwing around and playing soccor in the hallowed halls of HSBC Arena, he is fine. If you compare the two, Max puts butts in the seat, his speed makes other defenseman push back, however, his puck control leaves alot to be desired. Tim on the other hand, if he could stay healthy, but that's a BIG IF, I think he would be ok, but I would hate to see Mair or Goose loose ice time so that Tim could get playing time since they are both hard workers. As far as Rivet, man was I pissed when I heard about the trade. First, it caught me off guard, but then when I realized who he was I was feeling much better about it. I could not stand it when Buffalo played Montreal cause it always seemed that when we were neck-and-neck, Rivet was the one getting a goal, or drawing a penalty that would set-up a Canadiens win. Nice to see Bernier get a nice deal with the Canucks, I think the trade was fair and that he should do well as long as he can get into some better physical shape and improve his stamina. I think we indeed need another tier 2 or tier 3 defenseman because Teppo really isn't exciting me much at his age and with his health concerns, I like Weber and Sekera, Tallinder and Lydman should work well again if they can find their nich from 2 years ago, and Spacek and Rivet look to be, for all intents and purposes, the new #1 pairing. GO SABRES
I have to disagree Dog. Connolly is a wizard with the puck. The PP improves by a wide margin when he is in the line up. I am getting tired of all the injuries though. No player is any good to you if he is out of the line up year after year! I'm willing to give him one more chance at his age.
