Bernier was offered a 2.5m 1yr offer sheet by St. Louis, just mere days after Vancouver acquired him for a 2nd round pick in 2010 and 3rd round pick in 2009.
Since the offer sheet was in the 2.0mil to 3.0mil range, Buffalo (should St. Louis have filed the offer sheet) would have been entitled to St Louis' 1st and 3rd round picks in 2009.
Kinda stinky to see what could have been... (a single 1st round pick from the Blues in the 2009 draft might have been enough to secure Rivet from the Sharks)
[UPDATE]
My information was wrong (go figure that the
NHL CBA PDF document was out of date!) Here is the accurate information regarding offer sheet compensation for 2008:
2008-2009 RFA Offer Sheet Compensation
$863,156 or less = None
$863,156 - $1,307,811 = 3rd round pick
$1,307,811 - $2,615,623 = 2nd round pick
$2,615,623 - $3,923,434 = 1st and 3rd round pick
$3,923,434 - $5,231,246 = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$5,231,246 - $6,539,061 = Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
$6,539,061 or more = Four 1st round picks

because the offer was between a certain amount the offer was only a 2nd rounder. so actually, if the offersheet wasnt matched, the cannucks would have traded a 2nd and a 3rd for a 2nd.
Your numbers are erroneous. A contract below $2.61M only gets a 2nd rounder. Darcy got that plus a 3rd, so it's a win.
I think VAN/STL planned the whole offer sheet thing from the beginning in an attempt to get their respective players signed to decent contracts (Bernier was supposedly looking for a 2.8-3 million per contract from the Canucks, before he signed St. Louis's 2.5 million per offer sheet).
How could Van/ StL plan that? Bernier is the one who signed the offer sheet. Davidson just wanted to kick back at the Canucks for signing Backes to an offer sheet last week. Duh.
I apologize for giving the wrong numbers, the CBA PDF ( http://www.nhlpa.com/CBA/2005CBA.asp ) still has numbers from 2005-2007The correct values can be found here:http://nhlscap.com/offer_sheets.htmSo yes, $2,615,623 - $3,923,434 would be 1st AND a 3rd round pick$1,307,811 - $2,615,623 is just a single 2nd round pickI'll update the post above...
We wish that JD had offered Bernier 3yrs @ 2.5M per year, which is what our offer sheet to the Blues player was, we would have been very happy.
This prevents Van from signing Bernier longterm, since they had to match the one year deal, and could not make their own deal. Is Bernier still a RFA next year?
I believe so.
Not bad, if he doesnt fit in or isnt playing well they can trade him for a draft pick and if he does play well they can lock him up next summer to a long term. A win win for Vancouver.
Bernier (Like all offer sheeted RFAs) can only sign an extension with Vancouver on Jan 1 2009.
Darcy made the right deal, he dumped a player that did not fit into the Sabres' game style very well.
