Avs Goalie Situation.

Posted 8:40 PM ET | Comments 1
Welcome back Avaholics,

Today is the day before Friday July 1st, which as we all know is Free agent frenzy. Were NHL free agents test the market to find a new team to play for , for more money or just a change of scenery.

Now the Avs have alot to look at during this summer starting tomorrow. the main goal right now goaltending. The Avs have made a decision when the season ended to not bring back Peter Budaj to the Organization and in the last week not to give a qualifying offer to Brian elliot, who they received in the trade with Ottawa for Craig Anderson. Also the 2 Goaltenders in the Avs farm team Lake Erie, Jason Bacashuia and John Grahame are also UFA's starting tomorrow and in my mind will be testing the market as well.

So now the Avs are in the hunt for not 2, but 4 goalies.

In my opinion i could see the Avs signing two prospect goaltenders to the minors . Just so you have an idea what Prospects are out there in the Avs system, here ya go.

Sami Aittokallio- 18 yrs old- 6'1" 174 Lbs- Gp GAA SVS%

2010-2011 Ilves SM-liiga 16 2.73 .909

Trevor Cann- 22 yrs old- 5'11" 199 lbs-Trevor Played for the CHL and AHL last season with the Tulsa Oilers in which he posted a 13-9-3 record with 3.41 GAA and a .908 SVS% in 26 games played, and the Lake Erie Monsters were he played 7 games and posted a 2-3-0 record and had a 3.43 GAA and a .892 Svs% .

Kent Patterson- 21 yrs old- 6'1" 184 lbs- Kent played for the University of Minnesota last season, where he played 30 games and posted a 14-9-6 record. With a 2.54 GAA and .919 SVS%. We havent heard much of this kid but he was drafted in the 4th round in 2007.

Kieran Millan- 21 yrs old- 6'0- 190 lbs- Kieran played for Boston University last season, where he played 36 games and posted a 16-10-8 record. With a 2.68 GAA and .919 SVS% . Drafted in 2009 in the 5th round. Another player we havent heard much of, the reason probably being that he and Kent patterson went the education route of making it to the NHL. If it doesnt work out in the league they will have something to fall back on .

Calvin Pickard- 19 Yrs old - 6'1" 195 Lbs. This is the Avs Prospect everyone is excited about. Last season he played 68 games for the Seattle Thunderbirds and posted a 27-33-8 record, with a 3.36 GAA and .916 SVS%. Now although these numbers dont look attractive, this guy are backstopping a subpar team. In his 68 games played he turned away 2443 shots, which was the most in his league for goaltenders. The Avs signed him to an Entry level contract and i believe he may get the back up job in Lake Erie. ( Just my Opinion though). Drafted in 2010 in the 2nd round.

Now its hard to say if the Avs let the other goalies in Elliot , Grahame, and Bacashuia test the market tomorrow, if they will still give them offers to stay on the team. But if i was the Avs i would be looking into bringing in the youth to give them experience, with Pickard being the main Piece of the future puzzle.

The truth is, the Organization never really prepared for when Patrick Roy retired, with goaltenders in their system, and its been a major problem with the team since he hung the Pads up. But this new management seems to understand the new direction and where to fill in the holes for the future.

Now with tomorrow coming quick, im 80% sure the Avs will sign Tomas Vokoun to a contract. Hes looking for a team where he has a chance to make the playoffs and hopefully hoist the cup in the near future.

For the Backup role in the linup. The Avs should look at goaltenders, Josh Harding, Mathieu Garon and Jeff Drouin - Deslauriers. All are solid in the Back up position.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring, or the summer. One thing i believe is we cant let these young guys sit for to long. Who knows which one of them could be the Avs next Patrick Roy.

Thanks for Reading.
