Multiple league sources have informed the Sabres as the team chosen to represent the league in an "Ice Bowl" on the first day of 2008. The opponent, most likely, would be the Pittsburgh Penguins as it should. The combination of Sidney Crosby and Malkin copuled with facing an appointent who's fans will fill the Ralph in a matter of hours will be outstanding. The genius behind the event is that the timing. I love the timing because hockey has to compete with NCAA football bowl games, which now are dragging a week after the first of the new year. A date that fans will remember easily and an outstanding PR move by the league for once. To break up such a long season by having a spectacle would be tremendous for the sport.
Buffalo out of all places is the chosen area by the league. Why? Canada access is so close and fans from southern ontario and western pennsylvania is easily accessible. Another possible reason could be the new and improved HD scoreboard at Ralph Wilson Stadium this summer. The view of a puck from section 311 row 14 seat 4 maybe considered microscopic. But you are not going to go to the game for the game itself. It's the event itself and the tailgaiting before hand. Lets face it the Buffalo Bills won't be in the playoffs so it will be refreshing to see cheers in the Ralph for once.
