I just got back from vacation to see the horrid Kotalik signing. Sather just shot the Rangers in the foot (more like heart) with this move. That should have been used to sign a center, not an underachiever.
Now what should the dummy do? We need a center, but that doesn't get through his thick skull. I mean Kotalik has a lethal shot and will fit into the Torts system but $3mil is a bit much. This probably means that Zherdev is a gonner. He is asking for about $4 million and can fetch a good D man in the trade market. He also doesn't fit into the Tortorella plan and should be out of the Big Apple if Sather has a brain.
Maybe this could be something to consider......
Zherdev(qualified at $3.2mil), Roszival($5mil), Sauer,($850,000) and Voros($1mil) to the Oilers for Patrick O'Sullivan($2.9mil), Steve Staios($2.7mil), and Zach Stortini($700,000).
This clears cap space, gives you a great center with grit and desire, and a rough defenseman with a good shot. Also you get a good 4th line/penalty killer in Stortini. You lose three lazy, overpaid bums with talent and a strong defensive prospect.
I would then get our GOOD RFA's (Callahan, Dubinsky) to resign. Let Korpikoski go to the KHL. I would ink Callahan at $2 million and Dubi at $1.8. This leaves around $5 million of cap space. I think I would save it to go after Kovalchuk next summer, but maybe I would get a Power Play beast like Mathieu Schneider. He wouldn't be offered over $4million because of his age so I would shoot for around $3.8 million.
Not bad eh?
