Note to Preds fans: I don't necessarily want to see the Preds move to Hamilton because I think they have a very solid base of real fans who deserve a better fate, and because their rivalry with the Blues has been intense in the past few years. However, if they do move, there will be an imbalance in the league and it will probably lead to the addition to 2 new teams in...
I was looking over one of my favorite forums and on there was a map showing the locations of all the teams in the league. This picture awoke me (already knew that it was bad) of how unfair the eastern teams have it. These are prime examples of advantages out east. Drury moves from Buffalo to New York... He doesn't really have to move. Gomez moves from New Jersey to New...

Go West Young Man

I've been following the never ending quest of Jim Basille to beg, borrow or steal an NHL franchise to bring back to his hideout in Hamilton. Now I don't really have a vested interest in this soap opera since I'm not a fan of the Coyotes (although it seems that that wouldn't put me in the minority in Arizona), nor am I partial to ensuring a team relocates to Hamilton, Ont....

NHL Division Realignment

The move of the Thrashers to Winnipeg is all but complete at this point. Since this would mean one more team in the Western Conference than in the Eastern Conference, a division realignment is due. Instead of taking my preference into this process, I decided to take two objective approaches. The first method I tried to have each division only include one time zone and w...
Yesterday Gary Bettman indicated he expects realignment for the 2012-13 NHL season. With the new Winnipeg franchise playing in the Southeast during 2011-12, a distance of almost 1,300 miles from where the Thrashers played, realignment of this franchise is a necessity. Since we aren't even finished with the Stanley Cup Finals for 2010-11 yet, I am a little surprised t...

NHL Realignment?

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
It's a hot topic. Apparently there's a major realignment coming thanks to the move to Winnipeg. 4 divisions, 7 in two divisions (in the West), 8 in the other two (in the East). How do you think it'd look? I have it: Western Conference Gretzky Division Vancouver Calgary Edmonton San Jose Anaheim Los Angeles Phoenix* (But for how long.....

NHL Realignment

Since the NHL's departure from Atlanta to Winnipeg the question has been on everyone's mind as to how the New divisions would look. That answer has been put off one year by the NHL, as the Winnipeg Jets will be playing in the SOUTHeast division with the likes of Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay and Washington. There have been rumors floating around about a new 4 division ...

Realignment 2012 is happening. The board of Governors along with the GM's announced publicly that realignment would be sorted out before the new year and that those changes would be put into effect at the start of the 2012-2013 season. That's all fine and dandy... except for the fact that we have no clue which team will end up in which conference/division come next season....
The NHL announced yesterday that for the 2012-2013 season, the teams would be shuffled into a four-conference league. This is a huge win for the Detroit Red Wings organization and for their fans. For years, Mike Ilitch and Company has been yearning for a ticket into the Eastern Conference, and they thought they might have their chance when Atlanta moved north. They now ...

NHL changes foundation

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
The NHL and the Board of Governors has approved a plan that will dramatically change the landscape of the NHL regular season and playoffs. With any new plan there are going to be pros and cons. Unfortunately for me I feel that the cons dominate the pros in the new setup. Here is some of the fallout from the changes: Creating divisional rivalries: The sche...

NHL Super Conferences

They haven't announced the names of the 4 conferences that take affect next season. I think they should go back to the classic Adams, Norris, Smythe, and Patrick. Or maybe something new: Gretzky, Orr, Hull, and Richard. What say you?

Phoenix...Quebec...Revisited

Last June I wrote the following blog about realignment. In it I included some comments concerning the Coyotes and a move to Quebec. I thought I would re-post it now because it seems that it's relevant given the news about the new arena being built in Quebec....and I think only 4 people read the original posting of it... __________________________________________________...
The NHL's New Realignment Plan Otherwise known as, getting the Winnipeg Jets into the appropriate division and conference! As of right now the NHL has the following plan to divide the league into four conferences, thus eliminating the East and West as we know it. Western Conference includes: Los Angeles, San Jose, Anaheim, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Phoe...
It's something that probably should have been done last year, but teams and fans are getting the first look at what could be the new NHL realignment plan. As with every situation and idea, not everyone is going to be happy about it and not everyone is going to be upset. Here is the proposed realignment, courtesy of TSN.ca- West: Pacific- Anaheim, Calgary, Ed...
One of the things that irks me (and most teams in the East) about the new proposed realignment is the fact that the East would have 16 teams, and the West has 14. One prevailing rumor is that there will be two expansion teams added to the league shortly after this realignment. It's not news to most that Seattle is the front runner if expansion happens, but the way this rea...
I’m starting this with a quote from Moneyball. Yes, I know it’s a baseball movie. No, I don’t care. “The problem we’re trying to solve is that there are rich teams and there are poor teams, then there’s fifty feet of crap, and then there’s us.” Brad Pitt’s character is describing his ball club, the Oakland A’s. Based on this, I propose th...
I believe that the NHL needs to realign the divisions into smaller divisions, similar to the NFL. Check out my idea for a new idea for NHL Realignment starting with the 2021 - 2022 season. Find out what division your NHL team moves to in the NHL Realignment plan! Also, this NHL Realignment has changes to the schedule structure, playoffs and if Florida and/or Arizona...
