Sather should be hung, NY • United States • 13 Years Old • Male
If I were in the shoes of Glen Sather I would do the following.....

-Trade Drury, Rozsival, and a 2010 3rd rounder to Ottawa for Dany Heatley. This frees up about $4 million of cap space, that is, if Ottawa accepts.

-Resign Zherdev to a 3 year deal at about $3 million per. This is a great deal because Z puts up 60-65 points a season and is young, giving him the potential to bloom into a star.

-Play the Youngsters. Matt Gilroy, Micheal Del Zotto, and Corey Potter are more than ready for the NHL squad. They can't do any worse than Redden and Mara did last year!

-Resign Betts and Sjostrom to identical contracts. They should both be able to be brought in at 1 million each for a year or two. They may not put up goals but the plus-minus is there and they are both unbelievable penalty killers.

-DON'T resign the rest of the free-agents-to-be on the roster with the exception of Dubinsky and Callahan. This gives you about $5 million to work with, plus the $4 million saved in the Heatley deal; $9 million.

-With that $9 million, I would take a poke at Brian Gionta, who would be a good fit with Scotty Gomez. That is a deal worth looking into. Gionta comes cheap at a probable $2.5 million. To add on, Kovalev provides great leadership and Power Play points, something the Rangers need. At $3.5 million, he's worth a try. Plus, Kovy would love to come back to the Garden to possibly win a cup to end hs career. For the $3 million remaining, I would try to land a minor leaguer, such as Geoff Peters or Matt Hussey, or I might just "save up" for next year's free agent frenzy.

-As for Wade Redden, I would leave him on the team. I think he and Heatley would be a deadly combo on the PP as old freinds from Ottawa. If he fails theBig Apple test again, by all means, get rid of him.

- These lines may win us a cup....

Heatley-Gomez-Gionta
Callahan-Dubinsky-Kovalev
Avery-Boyle-Zherdev
Sjostrom-Betts-Anisimov

Staal-Girardi
Redden-Gilroy
DelZotto-Potter/Sanguinetti/Sauer

Lundqvist
Valiquette
Johnson

Drury has a full no movement clause. Gionta will get 5m.

Here's what I would do as GM - dump all the overpaid players, play our youth and sign FA's for less than they'll get on the open market. That sounds like everyone's "what I would do as GM." The thing is, this is reality. Even if you WERE the GM, you couldn't do all that, no matter how well qualified for General Manager you might be, due to your blog writing skills. PFFT!

I think we shipped our 2010 3rd round pick to LA for Boyle anyway. Gionta might be a nice fit but there will be enough competition that $2.5 million a year is wishful thinking. No way that Murray takes Rozsival and Drury for Heatley. He already has turned down Zherdev-Rozsy for Heatley.

Dude, you're insane if you think Ottawa would take that deal. Second, Mara was kickass last year, I'd love to sign him. 3 years is too much for Zherdev. Kovalev is a waste of a roster spot, he decides when he wants to play. Corey Potter and Michael Del Zotto are not ready. MAYBE DZ.

Sanguinetti might be ready for a spot on D. I liked Mara last year and if we need to sign a vet D then I like him for that. Kovalev has already pissed me off everytime he has been here. Forget him. Zherdev maybe 2 years but $2.75 per max.

Zherdev can make no less than $3.25m because that is how he has to be qualified.

I believe he can sign a multi year deal with a lower AAS. The qualifier is only a one year deal and maintains the teams rights to the player in case he heads overseas and also guarantees compensation if he signs with another NHL team.

I think Del Zotto is more ready than Sanguinetti. Sanguinetti is a huge defensive liability.
