Here is my quick breakdown of what I expect each team to do this year at the draft. I will show you what each team's weakness is and later I will post who I think each team will draft based on these facts, in the first two rounds. A mock draft if you will. Here is my breakdown:
Anaheim - May need defensive help, but Brian Burke has a knack to make a good trade for an underrated d-man. Goaltending questions may arise in the future if Giguere leaves. Always looking to add more offense
Atlanta - They have good defence coming up, goaltending situation okay at the moment, look offense
Boston - Goaltending future not an issue, small up front, decent defense, look for forwards
Buffalo - Defense is an immediate need, may have best forwards and goalie in the league.
Calgary - Look to add to the blueline, very weak at forwards also, they will grab whoever the best pick still available is
Carolina - Need forwards to replace aging stars down the road. Very solid at D position
Chicago - Weakness is up front, big time
Colorado - They would like help at defence, but goaltending is also a need.
Columbus - In need of blueline reinforcements, could take a forward if a good one is still available
Dallas - They have a nice core of defencemen, look for offense
Detroit - Need help in Defence as they are getting older, also goaltending may be an issue
Edmonton - Defence, Forwards, and to a lesser extent, goaltending, all issues
Florida - Solid young offensive core is good, weakness is at defense, need someone who can play with Bouwmeester
Los Angeles - Goaltending, Offense both a concern. Defense also thin after Jack Johnson
Minnesota - They lack muscle up front, in need of a big strong power forward.
Montreal - Main concern up front, but could also use some defensive help if they lose Souray
Nashville - In need of good young forwards to take the place of some of their aging stars
New Jersey - May need some scoring up front, but could also benefit from a young defensive stud
New York Islanders - Need to stock up on defensive prospects because we know their goaltending situation is set for the next few years errr.... decade
New York Rangers - Forwards are quickly aging and they are in need for some young prospects
Ottawa - Depth and grit up front could benefit the sens greatly
Philadelphia - Plenty of holes to fill, Goaltending not one of them at the moment. Everything else.
Phoenix - 1 Coyote reached the 20 goal plateau this year. That should tell you everything you need to know. Goaltending still a question mark and defense still isn’t the greatest
Pittsburgh - In need of scoring from the wingers right now, but they may pursue goaltending and defensive depth in this years draft
St. Louis - Confident in their defense for now, but money may be spent to upgrade their offence.
Goaltending and Defense may be addressed at this years draft.
San Jose - They are set at the goaltending position with Toskala and Nabokov, Thornton and Marleau are both entering UFA years next season, so future offense may be a question
Tampa Bay - They need to develop future scorers. They are hard to come by so drafting one would save them a lot of $$$ in free agency and possible loss of assets in a trade.
Toronto - Need to get deeper in the forward positions, already have a solid crop of young defensemen, and Pogge is a couple of years away
Vancouver - Weak at the centre position, Sedin twins are 2 years away from being UFA’s so offense is key in this draft.
Washington - They should be active this offseason with the owner promising more money, main needs are at defense and in the goaltending area. Kolzig is turning 40 believe it or not and there is no one ready to take his spot.
A quibble re: Washington. Kolzig is only 37. He's said that he'll play until he's 40, however. One of Varlamov or Neuvirth, both selected in the few two rounds of last year's draft, should be ready for the show by then.
Sorry, I kind of worded that wrong. I meant to say that he is approaching 40 and there is no clear cut predecessor. Like you said, there are a few guys who could take the torch, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft a netminder.
