Tentative Agreement: My Story

I woke up this morning to the sound of my cell phone vibrating. I looked at my phone and there was 1 new message from my Uncle Hank. I opened the message. I saw one word: HOCKEY!! I ran into my grandfather’s room and he showed me his Kindle and there was a picture of a hockey goalie (I’m pretty sure it was Luongo) and the headline read, “Union Agrees to Tentative Deal”. Day 113 of the players strike and the lockout is finally over. And not a minute too soon; it was getting ugly.
On New Year’s Eve my mom got a request from Jason Spezza to follow her on his Twitter feed. How bad is hockey in Switzerland that Jason Spezza wants to follow my mom on Twitter?! As the strike got longer and longer a lot of people thought that the season was going to be a wash, but I always knew that we’d play.
I grabbed my iPod and began reading HockeyBuzz.com, NHL.com, PhiladelphiaFlyers.com to get all of the information about when training camp would start (I’ll be at the Flyers Skate Zone), the contract terms, and when the season would finally start. I was excited when I learned that part of the deal is that the Flyers will have two contract buy-outs instead of one which means that these salaries will not count against the cap. This will help the Flyers be more competitive in the summer because they will be able to spend a little bit more money on a few different players or on one large superstar contract. It’s fun for me and other hockey fans because it keeps hockey exciting even in the off-season.
This summer the Flyers might be able to sign Giroux(my favorite player), Couturier and Brayden Schenn to long term deals because they will have more money due to the contract buy-outs. The Flyers will buy out Ilya Bryzgalov’s massive contract if he does not perform again this year. I hope that Bryz can live up to his salary this season (I’m thinking playoffs, maybe even a Cup win) but I’m not so sure that will happen. I’m looking forward to a summer buy out and maybe another bid for my second favorite player, Shea Weber!
