There are un-confirmed rumours amongst Montrealer's that soon to be un- restricted free agent Mats Sundin has manifested some interest in the Montreal Canadiens. If this is true, what will it take to sign him?
At the trade deadline last February, Bob Gainey ( general manager of the Habs ) tried to acquire Mats Sundin from the Toronto Maple Leafs, but Sundin refused to waive his no trade clause. Now that the season is over for both the Habs, and the Leafs, is Sundin thinking of finishing his career in Montreal?
Sundin still has two years left in him. The Canadiens have their centennial celebration slated for the next NHL season of 2008-2009. This would be another warrior veteran that Montreal could use. Sundin would be the big scoring centre that the Habs need, great on face-offs, and gritty to boot!
There has been no confirmation that Sundin is interested in Montreal, just rumours for now. Gainey tried to acquire Sundin already, and now that Gainey wouldn't have to trade players like Chris Higgins, a draft pick, and possibly more to get him, then by all means go for it!
For far too long the Habs have needed a big scoring centre, and for far too long Sundin has had a field day playing against the Habs, isn't it about time the tables were turned?
If Sundin is interested, then he should speak to Gainey as soon as possible, to allow Gainey to possibly make some draft day moves to accommodate Sundin, or to acquire another piece of the puzzle.
I for one, would enjoy seeing Sundin play for Montreal, it would be almost the final piece of the puzzle that would bring Lord Stanley's Cup back to Montreal. Would it be a good signing, yes! Unfortunately for Sundin, every time he played in Toronto for the Habs, he would be seen as the enemy, where he has played for so long.
Let the off season rumours, and innuendos start, but hey, that's what makes the off season so much fun.
O_oyeah and sakic will sign with detroit -_-'
If Sakic plays again, it would be interesting to see where he signs.
If Sundin does sign with the Habs... I will Be a Habs till he retires!!! and also he would automatically become the Habs Best Player!!! Don't even Argue Kovalev would be.... maybe skill wise but True all round performer... Mats is King !!It would be a real slap in not only the Leafs' fans face bit to the City and organization itself!! He may very well throw all he's done for the team away with this move!! Tats why I don't see it happening... He had a choice to go to MTL and Said NO! what makes you think he'll go now??
if Sundin signs anywhere but Toronto it spoils his legacy in Toronto... he would be reviled almost universally by the fans after neglecting to genuinely help the team rebuild by not waiving his NTC... I could be misreading the situation, but I don't think he signs elsewhere...
Sundin is still a beast . i would like the Rangers to gage his interest in Ny. In Montreal think of all the screens he sets for Axles shot! weeeeeew scary
A-mar, what legacy does Sundin really have other than personal stats, no cups equals no legacy... the NTC unwaiver was a selfish decision and if he does return the media will make it into a nit pick of his game stats and a wondering of what might have been..... think Forsberg for Parent, Upshall, (and via draft pick they got and traded back for the rights to Timonen, Hartnell) suerely the Leafs could have gotten equal or better prospects and picks for Sundin... while Forsberg didnt return to the Flyers (thank you!), Sundin could have easily re-signed after July 1....its not like Sundin has been a Leaf his entire career
Just a tip, Mats can't talk to Montreal until after July 1st, and I'm certain the Leafs will not grant permission to Montreal to talk to him until then.As for the legacy, Mats does have a legacy, and he will destroy it, and never be welcomed again in Toronto if he signs in Montreal, unless the Leafs come right out and say, Mats is not being offered a contract.
i also heard a rumor that gary bettman is planning to put a team on the moon...it sounds more likely than sundin signing with montreal
i've heard that bettman still thinks hockey is basketball on ice
My god... wouldn't all their panties be in a bunch down the road in TO
