Word around the Blues' front is that they're working on something major for tonight's draft. In the past day-and-a-half, they've traded longtime winger Jamal Mayers to Toronto for a third round pick, and acquired goalie Chris Mason from Nashville in exchange for a fourth round pick. The name I've been hearing bantered about the most is Ottawa's Jason Spezza.
Spezza is expected to be moved out of Ottawa tonight, which would help them dump a ton of salary. The Blues need a scoring center that can also be a leader on the team. The Blues lost that quality of player when they traded Doug Weight to Anaheim last season.
I'm hearing the Blues are offering defenseman Jay McKee, winger Dan Hinote, and two prospects. The Blues don't want to give up the fourth pick if they don't have to, but it could be included as part of the deal as well.
Stay tuned, Blues fans....this is going to be a wild night!

Why do you post a blog and pass it off as your own when this topic has been kicked around for hours now on message boards in St Louis?
It doesn't matter anyway. I was watching the draft and they talked to Bryan Murray after they made their 1st pick and he said Spezza is NOT going anywhere.
jay mckee, dan hinote and two prospects for Spezza? Ottawa would be getting hosed biiig time. that's nowhere near what it should take to get a player of Spezza's caliber. he's not going anywhere...unless they get a ridiculous offer and with the first round already over, i highly doubt it.
St. Louis is still in the Spezza race from what I have heard. This could get interesting as the draft progresses.
Spezza will not be moved.
Spezza is going nowhere. Nowhere. And that's an e5.
