Tough break for fans of the up-and-coming Chicago Blackhawks.
The Hawks removed the $4 mill cap hit of Robert Lang today by trading his rights to the Montreal Canadiens for a 2nd-round draft pick in 2010.
Chicago was about $2.5 mill OVER the cap (give or take) when today began and needed to move somebody sooner or later as a result. The choice was Lang.
It's disappointing for Hawks fans but it was a necessary move, and let me tell you, Montreal got a very-capable veteran here....a GREAT move by Bob Gainey. Look out Northeast Division, Montreal's ready to repeat (and this coming from a Sabres fan..sigh). I really feel for Chicago (where I'm now living btw, moved here from Buffalo last week for grad school), but they have enough offensive upside and overall firepower to afford to lose Lang.
Make no mistake about it though. Lang was lost because of the cap.
No sympathy here. They knew they would be over when they signed Huet. I am sure the plan was to move Lang as the GM said he had no intention of moving Khabibulin.
harsh critic! yes it was a necessary move, but you can't feel for the team? they're not even my team, but i feel for them - especially with what happened to drury/briere on the sabres.
I'll have to agree with Feduniak. Signing Huet to such a huge contract...While the already have Khallibulin at a rate that makes him impossible to trade was a huge mistake.I however disagree Montreal will be so strong though, they had no injuries last year and I think that their goaltending situation is very shaky...I don't believe the Price hype.----www.sportonlinelive.comwww.liguenationale.com
i think hawk fans must have realized that havlat OR lang were being moved. lang's not a bad choice, as i really don't feel he's as effective any more, whereas, if havlat could JUST stay healthy, he's an elite talent.
true flames, i agree with you.
Haha, how could you feel for the fans? This wasn't some suprise, the team purposely went out and brought in some big UFA's, knowing someone would have to be moved.
And they didn't lose him because of the cap, they lost him because they chose to sign other UFA's instead.
your team is pushing the youth movement, getting lang for a second rounder was a great trade. Lang is old and overrated.
