It indeed has been a short summer for the Detroit Red Wings. By know everyone knows that the Wings added Marion Hossa to their lineup. He could have been the steal of the free agents especially since he signed quick and wanted to come play for Detroit. One thing I learned was that Hossa is good friends with Red Wings 4th liner, Tomas Kopecky. I expect this had a lot to do with him coming to Detroit and Detroit in turn offering him a contract. The same can be said about the Finnish connection with Valterri Filppula and Ville Leino. The Red Wings organization just doesn't go out and grab free agents like they used to pre-cap days. They want to make sure a player is a good fit.
The lines are shapping up as well. A few open spots left for the 4th line it looks and that will be the most interesting to watch as pre-season begins.
1st line:
Holmstrom, Datsuyk, Hossa
2nd line:
Zetterberg, Franzen, Hudler
3rd line:
Sammuelson, Filppula, Cleary
4th line:
Only thing that is for certain on this line is that it will be centered by Draper. Any number of players could land on this line depending on injuries or if the Wings want more scoring or grit on any particular night. Players fighting for spots are: Maltby, McCarty, Lieno, Downey, and Kopecky. I did not include Helm, who played in last years cup run, because Helm and Abdelkader will both start in Grand Rapids.
As I look at the potential lines, Hudler could be a fantasy hockey sleeper and that 3rd line could be the most dangerous 3rd line in the NHL. It looks to be a fun start at least to the year. I look forward to blogging a lot more this year as I will be able to watch more games.
Welcome back Red Wings and fellow Hockey fans!
Every time i think that Hossa signed with the Wings I want to puke.
hey great job the wings are going to be good
Again, a scary looking team Siss, Looking forward to the Sharks matchup with Detroit again. Always an exciting game!
Does it not bother anyone else that the number one power play unit on the Wings could be: Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom, and Hossa?
