Well, as hard as this is for me, a Flames fan to say, the better team won. Calgary played this game with grit and heart, but so did the Detroit Red Wings. Half of the problem coming into this series was the fact that many flames fans, among others, had it burned in their minds that #8 seeded Calgary could easily beat the #1 seeded Detroit, as the Red Wings have struggled through the playoffs ever since their 2002 Stanley Cup Win. Taking the Wings far too lightly made it even harder for Flame’s fans watch Calgary get out-scored, out-shot, and just plain out-played by Detroit. When you put into perspective that it was the #1 seeded team against the #8 seeded team, Calgary did put forth a valiant effort, and even batted hard through game six to push it to the second overtime. If not for Miikka Kiprusoff, this series would have been an absolute embarrassment to the Calgary Flames organization. When you look at the shots for Detroit and Calgary, it makes you wonder why this series was not over in four games, and it easily could have been if it were not for Kiprusoff, arguably this series’ most valuable player. Calgary played game 6 quite well, but the only flaw is that they played not to lose, instead of playing to win. Even after a heart wrenching goal by Johan Franzen early in the second OT, it was hard not to smile when the background was filled with the sounds of the Calgary fans chanting “Kipper, Kipper” to acknowledge the keepers outstanding play during that game, and throughout the series. Now, all eyes are on Vancouver and Dallas as they face off Monday night in the only game 7 of the first round of the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Flames fans should be thankful that the Flames at least went out in style tonight, and they provided us with some very exciting hockey. I for one was having a great time cheering and wincing and going through all the emotions during this playoffs, and really, isnt that what it is about? It's not about harping on other teams or players, getting mad when your team loses, it's just about the fun of it all. Thankfully, many of us are big enough hockey fans to just move on and cheer for another team, and just hope that next year brings a cup to the
