No Movement Forthcoming on the Blues' Blueline

In an online chat Blues President John Davidson had with fans today, he mentioned that despite the injuries and the influx of young defensemen on the roster, there will be no waiver wire pickups being made by the Blues going into the season.

There had been some preliminary discussions between the Blues and the agents for both Bryan Berard and Kyle McLaren, but Davidson said "We are status quo on the blueline at this time."

This means the Blues will start the season with seven defensemen: Eric Brewer, Barrett Jackman, Roman Polak, Steve Wagner, Mike Weaver, Jay McKee, and Alex Pietrangelo.

Speaking of Pietrangelo, he is expected to be in the lineup for the Blues when they open up the season at home against the Nashville Predators Friday night. The 18-year old first round pick in this year's draft played well enough in the preseason in head coach Andy Murray's eyes to warrant a spot on the blueline. Pietrangelo is on an entry-level contract, which means the Blues can play him for nine games this season and decide to send him back to his junior team afterwards without losing a year to his owning rights. If they decide to keep him after nine games, it will count as a year played in the NHL.
