Most of the time, third uniforms are a failure - in all sports. Lot's of teams will go with a color combo - usually to black - to look tough, one supposes. Or, they go with colors that are non-traditional for the team. Or, they find some "designer" to "update" the look.
Unfortunately, on the whole, one gets the impression that the creation of a third look is only done for the purposes of : 1) creating more ancillary sales, or, 2) trying to inspire a team way down in the standings to get upwardly mobile, and, 3) trying to convince the fans that change is on the way.
But wow! Those Blackhawks and Wings Winter Classic unis were SO impressive! Even more so in action than on the rack! They both had the class and style that is befitting of two Original Six teams.
The Hawks have had a third sweater for some time - and black is one of their traditional colors and does a great job of setting off the logo. But, that sweater they wore yesterday IS a classic that should be brought out more often.
Of course, the Wings, have correctly elected to stay with the traditional look and have declined to have a third uniform. Why mess with a universally recognized symbol?
However, as hidebound as I am, even I can be convinced. If the Wings could adopt the modified Detroit Cougars uniform they wore yesterday, I'd be all for it for an occasional third look. And I bet a lot of Wings fans loved it as well. The striped socks were particularly outstanding and during practice day when there were lots of shadows on the ice they provided an excellent visual advantage of seeing where one's teammates were. The old English 'D' is also a perfect tie-in with the traditional look of the Ilitch's other team, the Detroit Tigers.
I also thought the fedoras were a great touch for the coaching staff, although they have indicated that was only a one time look. But the coaching staff jackets - perfect! I MUST have one!
Great day, Great win.
Go Wings!
I personally loved both jerseys. Really brought the "Classic" theme front and center.
i loved those hawk jerseys, i wish they were permenent.
my balls are sweaty
They really did a better job this year than last. My vote is for next year being at Fenway with Boston vs Mtl, Tor, or NYR.
