The latest in the Dany Heatley Soap Opera (according to ESPN.com) is that the Senators have rejected a trade offer that would have sent Sharks RW Jonathan Cheechoo and offensive defenceman Christian Erhoff to Ottawa for Heatly.
Reasons why the trade was not accepted were not posted, but judging by what I've read all summer long it came down to money.
Since Heatley's bonus kicked in on July 1, the Senators have upped the price tag on their star forward. Any team that wants to take on his $7.5 million cap number will also have to take on an addition $3-4 million in Senators payroll. The Sharks can barely afford Heatley, so there was no way they could take on additional salary.
In fact, I wonder why San Jose was even pursuing Heatley to begin with. The Sharks are currently about $600k from the salary cap, and still need to find two more forwards and a backup goaltender to fill out their depth chart.
Assuming that the trade was accepted by the Senators, I still doubt that Heatley would approve. He left Atlanta because he wanted to go to a real hockey market. With all due respect to my fellow Sharks fans, San Jose is not a real hockey market. As a group we complained more than Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton didn't answer questions after a disappointing first round playoff loss than we did about the fact that they were the only ones actually doing anything the last two games aside from Blake and Boyle.
Where Heatley will end up I have no idea, but I expect he will be back in Ottawa or off to Edmonton when camps open in Spetember.
Psh...send him to Edm along with Gator - he played his best in Edm anyways. Then, Heatley can request a trade next year to the Armpit Armadillo's or whoever is willing to put up with his prima donna behavior...and I'm an Oil fan.
At this point, I am sick of hearing where heatley will play. He's an amazing player, and any team with him is instantly better...however, you have to wonder what the hold-up is.
its Heatley not Heatly
if i were an oiler fan i wouldnt want this guy on my team....after having to beg him to consider playing for us...
thanks for the correction nick.
I think it was nixed because the deal is not good enough. Ehrhoff? Sure, he's a fine player, good start. Cheechoo? A reclamation project who's been declining due to injuries. And he makes 3 million dollars. No deal. Michalek or Clowe and Ehrhoff and we're on the right page IMO.
i'm curious if Sens fans would rather have Cogliano, Smid and Penner or Cheechoo and Ehrhoff? i may be biased as an Oilers fan, but no way is that a better deal...
Out of all of the far western states, San Jose does have one of the best hockey fanbase. Hockey market or not, more fans show up for their games than they do for the Islanders, Thrashers, Panthers, Lightning, Blues, Coyotes and Kings combined.
Heater I never said it was a good deal, but I was hearing rumors of it two weeks ago so that's why I think they considered it.
Slick I won't deny the great fanbase, but at the time of Heatley's departure Atlanta had a strong fanbase too (helps when you're making the playoffs I guess). But the fact is that SJ isn't appealing when fans and media focus more on off-ice behavior than on-ice production. That's what Heatley doesn't want.
ZackElias- Yes I would rather have the oilers package based soley on rather having Cogliano... Now it would take Cogs,Smid and O'Sullivan though Unless you guys are up against the wall salary cap wise, then throw in penner
nice blog!
