The Blues have invited free agent defenseman Darryl Sydor and left winger Ryan Bayda to training camp on a professional tryout, sources have confirmed.
Sydor, 37, tallied three goals and 12 assists in 73 games played with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars last season.
Bayda, 28, had five goals and seven assists in 70 games played with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2008-09.
Sydor is expected to compete for a spot on the roster on defense since defenseman Eric Brewer is still recovering from back and knee surgeries. Sydor is seen by many within the NHL as a great locker room leader and mentor to young players, and a guy that can still contribute in the league.
Bayda, the former third round draft pick of the Hurricanes in 2000, will be looking to solidify a spot on the roster on either the third or fourth line. Since breaking into the league in 2002-03, he's been known as a gritty forward that is not afraid to attack the corners for loose pucks, throw his weight around when needed, and show the flashes of scoring touch he displayed at the University of North Dakota and in the minors.
I'll be back this weekend with the second part of the look at the 2009-10 St. Louis Blues that was never fully finished, because of some personal issues that contributed to the long layoff in between posts.
