Tonight, the Bulin Wall rises in Edmonton. It should be a fun game. Mike Comrie also makes his hometown return. Will the fans boo and heckle? I don't think so. Comrie has looked decent so far in pre-season play, and the sense of optimism that surrounded the Oilers at the beginning of last season has suddenly returned. Many feel that the Oil have real potential to surprise this year, and all the fans who were screaming for a coaching change might have a reason to gloat.
How 'bout that Flames game last night? Neon Dion put Kyle Okposo from the Islanders in hospital with a massive hit. Oh, and some guy named Theo Fleury scored a shootout goal to win the game. I am cheering for Theo to make the team this season - I remember seeing him stick it to the Oilers on more than one occassion 15 years ago; he was the player you loved to hate. Quality villians in the NHL are hard to come by: This is not some Sean Avery who makes a joke out of the league. Fleury is the little engine that could. And yes, he had his problems with booze, but he's clean now, and could very likely earn a spot on the team because he's worked his butt off, and still has talent.
There should be some completely decent games between the Oilers and Flames this season. The Battle of Alberta could be called The Battle of Western Canada, because the Canucks, Oilers and Flames will be fighting it out all year for the Northwest Division title. Three very different teams, but all capable of winning the west. It should be fun.
In other NHL news, word is, Nashville is close to completing a deal with Boston for Phil Kessel. What I find interesting about this deal is the fact that Kessel is injured, and likely won't be able to play till mid-November. There really is no rush for the Bruins to trade him, so the talk of the deal with the Preds seems a little premature to me. It's possible that the Bruins could get a better deal out of someone a month into the season, if a team that was suppose to be winning is tanking. Considering cap space, the B's really can't add any salaries to their team. So Kessel will be moved with another asset, or the Bruins will be looking for draft picks. It looks like the Leafs, for now, have turned down the rumored asking price for Kessel, which was 2 firsts and a second...smart move by TO if true, because I suspect the Leafs will be drafting in the Top 10 in the next couple of seasons.
The Oilers website must be expecting Nikolai Khabibulan to have a big game, because tonight's roster has Devin Dubnyk listed as a defenseman. Another interesting note about tonight's line-up is the addition of winger Miroslav Lazo. The 32 year-old Slovakian has decent totals from the Slovakian league - a point a game, and an average of four penalty minutes per. Could he be a dark horse for a fourth-line power forward job?
The Oilers starting line-up seems to be taking shape, although certain questions still have yet to be answered. Jordan Eberle looks to be ready for the NHL - Would it be better for his development to play him, or to send him back to junior? Has Robbie Schremp done enough in the off-season to finally earn a shot with the Oil? Would the Oilers be willing to put someone like Pisani on waivers to open up a roster spot? And what will the line combinations be? The first line of O'Sullivan - Horcoff - Hemsky seems to be a lock, but from there the lines are completely unset. And finally, will the Oilers look to make any more deals before the season begins? Rumor is, Ottawa would still like a defenseman from Edmonton, and the Oilers could afford to move someone for the right return.
Decisions, decisions...
Max - I say leave Eberle in Junior. With the CBA and free agency rules now, if Eberle played this year, he would be heading for free agency at age 24!/25!! Much like Gagner - 7 years in the league will make him a free agent at age 25. Leave him in Junior for one more year. Next year, Pisani and Moreau will both be UFA's, and while I think we should keep both, we should be able to get both for the price of one of them now!! Good post.
I think MacT is coaching tonight and put Dubnyk at defense. Apparently Lazo was working out with lubo. From what I gather he is an loose cannon agitator. Not sure if he is for here or the AHL. Really seems like Tambo has toughened the AHL team up this year. I will get a first hand look tonight at Lazo and others and I hope to have a decent idea of who brings what.
Mikey. I agree and I would almost have Eberle play one year in the AHL before he plays in the NHL.
Lubo to Lazo...sounds kinda cool.
Eberle cant play in the AHL, he is to young so he would be going back to the WHL. Which the way it sounds if he is doing this well in Preseason give him 9 games see what happens, i think if he goes back to the WHL it could hold him back because he will destroy down there it will be to easy, he looks like a man now and if he went to the WHL he would be a man among boys, skate circles around them and potentially could become lazy. Pisani to waivers, get it done Maxbone call up Tambs!!!
Agreed get him up and give him a crazy 15 year deal!!!
from what i saw of Jordan he does look ready to play in the nhl. Schremp might as well start packing his shit now cause he is done here. Lets move forward with our first round picks that are actually worth something and let the past die.
Pisani on waivers i love it i mean his cap hit is ridiclous, if this team really wants to move forword it needs to ditch some old weight. Next on the list should be Staios!!!! Plante and Peckam I think could be ready for the NHL.
You guys are a little out of touch. You can't waive all the veteran players and play all rookies.Think first.
Likely the only rookie that would be in Edmonton this season is Eberle. Maybe Schremp. Plante looks great but the Oil have already said they want him to get a year of AHL experience. The only way Plante and Peckham would be in is if there were trades or injuries. They won't wave Staios.
Why not Colin? If they aren't claimed they get paid their NHL salary to play in the minors.
al, because look what happened to all our young players last year. They were hot and cold all year, do we really need to hav more young players and less vets.
I see your point but it would be a good way of getting out from under bad contracts on mediocore players. That is only if someone were to pick them up. We have to many contracts as is so I would be happy to see it. Then maybe we could pick up some good young players in the off season like the Leafs and Rangers did this last off season.
If Eberle keeps up the strong performance through the pre-season there is no reason that he won't get a couple of regular season games before the final decision is made to either keep him (and allow his NHL contract to kick in) or send him back to Regina for another season in the WHL and another World Junior Championship. Shremp with be given every chance to make his own destiny. 1 year deal = 1 more chance.
I dont understand why everyone is trashing on Schremp? We had a coach who hated him and he never got a shot in the NHL, he played five games and got 3 points. Thats pretty good, we dont really know what this guy can do in the NHL. I hope he makes the team so we can trully know what we have in Schremp. His pass to Gilbert against Calgary was a talented pass and I think he could help with his talent. I would take him on my team over Pisani.
Ryan, would you rather have a "potentially" hot and cold world juniors superstar in eberle who's cap hit is low and who is being embraced by Ales Hemsky? OR an overpayed verteran (aka grinder) who's gotten 65 points and been -7 in his last 171 games (3 seasons). And if you have a problem with hot and cold players then we might as well send Gagner down to the AHL, because he's young and very streaky. Is Claude Lemiux around? He'd be a great fit.
Looks like comrie and Osulivan will be on the same line.Shremp still not doing enough to make NHL team.
