It's looking more and more likely that the Paul Kariya era in St. Louis is about to end.
There have been rumors floating around St. Louis from varying sources (including one very reputable source) that Blues winger Paul Kariya is on his way out of St. Louis, and is headed up north to play for his hometown Vancouver Canucks. These same sources have said that Kariya has waived his no-movement clause to play for the Nucks, only on the condition that they sign him to a one-year contract extension.
In the rumored deal, Kariya would be headed to Vancouver in exchange for goaltender Cory Schneider and forward Pavol Demitra.
It's been rumored for a while that the Blues have had serious interest in Schneider, a former first round draft pick by the Canucks. As long as he were to stay in Vancouver, he wasn't going to get playing time because of some goalie manning the net for the Canucks.
You may have heard of him...Roberto Luongo.
Vancouver is doing their best to get as high a return in exchnge for Schneider as possible, and St. Louis seems to have put the best offer on the table to date.
As for Demitra, Vancouver moving him back to the team he had his most career success with is merely a salary dump on their part. Demitra is an unrestricted free agent at season's end, and the Canucks weren't planning on re-signing him.
If the deal goes down, maybe Demitra could provide enough offensive output to convince the Blues to sign him to an extension after the season.
I would expect this deal to happen by the deadline of 3 PM tomorrow, if not tonight.
If I hear more, I'll be sure to update.

How is this a salary dump?Demitra, a UFA at season's end, is making $4.5 millionKariya, a UFA at season's end, is making $6 millionBesides, coming off a huge Olympics, why would Van move Demitra AND a young goalie for a broken down old KariyaMakes no sense. And what about the other 31 teams
Vancouver is basically giving their bad contract to St. Louis for the Blues' bad contract. But, in the end the Blues will end up with a young promising goaltender in return as well. I'm pretty sure there's more to this deal in terms of picks and/or prospects involved as well, but that hasn't been released. Unless something breaks down in negotiations between now and 3 PM tomorrow, this deal should get done.
There would have to be a lot more. Vancouver has their back to the wall capwise and is not in a position to take on an additional $2million that comes with Kariya. Like I said, makes no sense to give up the better veteran in Demitra and a young goalie for a retread. It would also make no sense for Vancouver to give Kariya a contract extension.
31 other teams?
