St. Louis Blues Quick Hits

Here are some quick little nuggets of news pertaining to the Blues on this, the first day of free agency...

- The Blues got a real bargain in re-signing Alex Steen for what they did. The Blues were expecting to have to pay a lot more than the $3 million per season they signed him for today. This now frees up money for other uses the Blues may need in free agency.

- If Carlo Colaiacovo ends up leaving the Blues, I would expect the Blues to jump in the running for Dan Hamhuis. Or, they could settle for a cheaper option on defense such as Kurtis Foster or Marc-Andre Bergeron.

- Even though it's a stretch at this point, I wouldn't completely rule out a Sheldon Souray-for-Eric Brewer swap. Even though Souray's play in the defensive zone has been been criticized, the Blues know they need a quarterback playing the point on the power play, as well as a puck-mover on defense. Unlike Brewer, Souray fits both of these roles, and when healthy is one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL.

- Signing Ilya Kovalchuk seems like an extreme long shot, but considering the Blues have the financial flexibility at this point to do it, I will point this out. The longer he stays out in free agency today, the better it looks for teams not named Los Angeles, Toronto, or any other "bright lights, big city" team that a lot of NHL insiders seem to think Kovalchuk wants to play in.
