"Why not a rebuild?"

First off how is it that Kevin Lowe has single handedly destroyed the financial system of the NHL. He signed a young kid with a lot of potential to an inflated contract for sure, but he needed to to get the kid out of LA. Brian Burke can cry all he wants, but he lost this time. I would say his 4 million signing of an old injured maligned player who never was a star in this league is the same thing. Bertuzzi is a mid level talent with injury issues. I am a Flyers fan, and i think the contract that we had to give Briere is outrageous, but i am ok with it if it helps us win, i think Gomez and Drury got too much also. So why not blame the Flyers and the rangers for ruining the system while you are at it.

To me this is nothing but bitter fans ranting becuase they didn't get what they wanted. If any one here can claim that they don't want their GM to do everything in his power to make their team better than they are full of crap. Nylander 5.5 Mil, Blake 5 mil, Cory Sarich 3.9 Mil. Are those not inflated numbers?

Betting on potential and leveraging against another teams cap is what the NHL has done to itself. I still don't know why the PA singed the deal, to me it is very flawed and until the current CBA expires and Gary Bettman is history don't expect much to change, only maybe it will get worse.

I agree that Burke played a role in this. In Vancouver, he routinely let RFAs hang out there awhile before signing them and often got them for cheaper rates. Those days in the NHL are over and the smart GMs will sign their RFAs before they become free agents. The trade deadline may feature RFAs from here forward as well. It should be interesting to say the least.

Your blog rings true sir, too many fans out there are foaming at the mouth over this and all because a few media people and bloggers decided it wasn't the honest way to build a team and he paid way too much. Maybe he did pay too much for next year, but what about the years after? As for inflating salaries, every team has to live within the cap. Some players will get paid more than others. Each G.M. decides the worth of the player they are going after. Simple as that. Brian Burke was too busy admiring himself in the mirror and a young player with a huge potential got away. Too bad for you Burke! You snooze, you lose.

Your right on in this blog, I find it amazing that people are pointing at the oilers when every team that is going to be competitive this year is doing the same.

I don't really feel that the Oilers did anything wrong. They were just going by what is in the rules. Did they over pay? Sure did but so did the Flyers the Rangers and everyone else that needed to sign a FA.Lowe did what was in the rules to help his team, Burke may not be happy with it but that is just sour grapes.
