Looking at the Habs offseason their focus was to add scoring depth and get tougher. They arguably have done that in Toffoli and Anderson.
But what do we expect these two to bring to the table? Lets see how they do:
Playing a full season:
Toffoli- I don't have much fear with him in this one. He played pretty much full seasons the last three years. He did get knocked out of the playoffs due to a high ankle sprain but I think he should bounce back pretty well with all the time off. I think we can expect him to play a full season with the Habs.
Anderson- Ehhhh, I'm not so sure about this one. He has not been super durable during his time out there so far. Sure, if you ignore the last season he isn't doing too badly, but im not 100% sold on his health, particularly with his style of play. I think if they are lucky, he plays 85% of the games as he attempts to return to form.
Scoring 20+ goals
Toffoli- I think we can expect 20+ goals from him easily. In the last 6 seasons he has topped 20 goals four times, one of which includes a 30 goal season. Assuming we play a full season I think he has shown he is pretty consistent. Production from him is almost a guarantee.
Anderson- I feel like I'm hating on this guy, but I'm just doubtful about health. IF he remains healthy, and it's a big if in my eyes, its a possibility. Not counting this year he has put up 17, 19 and 27 respectively. Those are pretty decent numbers. But I don't think he gets it this year. I can see him chucking in 15-18 as of now,in a return to form season, but I wouldn't count him out to break the 20 goal mark if he's fully healthy.
Toughness and Team spirt
Toffoli- We saw what he could do in the playoffs. I think he brings a big boost to the Habs in a big way. No pun intended. I think of him as a young Eric Cole for us. Quite able to be gritty and put up goals with a banger attitude. Good guy to be around and good for the kids to see.
Anderson- He gets big marks here. He is known as a power forward and is not afraid to throw down for his teammates. He brings grit and grind to a team that desperately needs it. I watched him when he was healthy in Columbus and I loved it. Hopefully he is healthy and can carry it over. I think he does great if he is healthy.
Toffoli- Time on the PK is pretty much assured. Despite being a fairly gifted producer, he has high defensive awareness. He is really smart positionally and seems to always be adjusting to the play around him well. If you are a number guy he is a + 82 for his career in the regular season. The only dips being in his last year and a half on an atrocious LA team. Sure, he was a -4 with Vancouver in the playoffs but I don't think that can be held against him much. He is solid.
Anderson- He has seen an equal amount of offensive and defensive starts in his career so he is someone who can play both ends of the ice. He will throw a lot of hits in a game if he is healthy. His last full season he threw 214 hits and made life miserable for any players trying to get to close. I think we can expect to see him in a shutdown role in addition to an offensive one. His two-way game is pretty impressive.
Toffoli- I think its fair to say he is a fairly safe bet to do well for the Habs. Overall he has the experience and skill to contribute well to this team. I can see him doing well coming out of the gate with limited question marks about his game.
Anderson- In a world where everything goes right, I can see him doing quite well with the Habs. That being said, I think this season may be more of a "return to form season" as he comes back and attempts to find his game speed. Overall I think he can do quite well if healthy, but I wouldn't expect it this season immediately.
You guys have played a very important role in giving me the information about hockey and You have developed an interest in this game. BIM Models This post also contains a lot of information about this game and it is really impressive.
This has brought a lot of information about the players that you have shared here. happy to see all this one. smarcon Thank you for this and really good at the way you have represented it. Keep sharing.
Personally, I don't understand Mtl's decisions this offseason. They were the 24th team, and scraped into playoffs solely due to the Covid circumstances. Now you max out your cap acquiring veteran players through free agency and trading? You could have taken on a couple bad contracts and been left with some high picks/prospects. This team is not projected to make playoffs, and to spend so much on veterans like Tofolli/Allan and, trade a consistent point producer for a guy coming off major surgery (then inking him for 7 years) seems like a reach. Burgervan's going to be looking for a new job if they don't make the playoffs.
Ill be honest. I thought they were going to use the cap space entirely different. The Allen and Anderson signings blew me away when I first read about them. I couldn't wrap my head around it. I really still can't with the Allen one. Are you telling me there was no other cheaper options bergy? As for Anderson, like i can understand they why, just not the extension given. Crazy term for someone who has barely played. They really need him to work out well. I like the Toffoli signing. On its own it would be a nice step in the right direction as would Anderson on a shorter deal. 2-3 years type thing.
Exactly Hockeyaddict. My guess is Berge was told this would be his last season as GM if they didn't make the playoffs. It's the only reason I can come up with. These moves did not make any sense for the current state of this club.
Precisely. It reminds me of when Bob Gainey decided to "make moves" and acquired Scott Gomez. While this Bergevin doesnt reek as badly as Gainey, its in the same genre move making. Though again I willl stress, that the Gomez trade was about 10x worse then these trades and signings. God he sucked.
Ya, as a Dev's fan let me be the first to apologize. Gomez was an absolute stud for our club, and the the wheels just fell off after that.
LOL. I remember exactly where I was when I heard about the trade. My friend called, and all he could say in a broken voice was ...."Scott Gomez...Scott Gomez....Scott Gomez." he ended in a whimper and I collapsed shortly after that.
Lol thank you for your sympathy. I really don't know how he got so bad so fast.
It shocked me too. Gomez will be a better broadcaster than he ever was a Montreal Canadian.
