New Coaching Staff

Posted 5:36 PM ET | Comments 2
Moving into the Calgary Flames thirtieth season, we as fans have been given hope for a chance to move forward from a disappointing end to a very promising season. Today at 3PM local Darryl Sutter has announced a new coaching staff for the Calgary Flames, bringing in his brother Brent Sutter, Former flames Dave Lowry and Jamie McLennan, and Former head coach of the Quad Cities Flames Ryan McGill.

Brent Sutter: The younger brother of Darryl, Brent has previously played in the NHL from 81-98, playing 1111 career regular season games, winning 2 Stanley cups and having the honour of being the captain of the New York Islanders. After retiring he turned to coaching right away, becoming the coach and GM of the Red Deer Rebels, a team he owns to this day. In this time he made it to a finals appearance, but his greatest success was coaching the National Junior team, leading them to consecutive Gold medals at the World Juniour in 05 and 06. Including the 2007 Super Series, Sutter has an unbeaten record of 20 games in world junior competition. In the last two years he has been the coach of the New Jersey Devils, stepping down this summer to go closer to home. On June 12th, Darryl Sutter was given permission from Lamoriello to speak to Brent, and today he was announced as the Head coach.

Ryan Mcgill: Another Albertan and former NHL player, Darryl Sutter has coached him back in Chicago. He has most recently been the head coach of Calgary's former affiliate the Quad City Flames, and many people who have played for both Mcgill and Darryl have stated that they have very similar philosophies. Nystrom has stated that he would be scared s***less if Darryl and Mcgill were both coaching on the same team. Good thing it's Brent and not Darryl that's coaching with Ryan this year.

Dave Lowry: A former flame, and yet another player that has played under Sutter, Lowry has been a captain and was a part of the miracle run to the Stanley cup finals in 2004 for the Calgary Flames. Most recently he has been an associate and then head coach of the Calgary Hitmen, leading them to a 59-9-4 record. I personally have gone to school with his daughter in junior high, high school and university, and can attest that I am very proud and excited that Lowry is going to be a part of the Calgary Flames once again. I know he will be a head coach in the NHL very soon.

Jamie McLennan: Another former flame, more popularly known as "Noodles", he is one of the most charismatic and fan friendly Flames to come along in a long time. Good friends with Kiprusoff, it seems like a seamless transition to now work with both him and Curtis Mac. Hopefully he can help find the spark in Kipper that will bring him back to pre 2006 levels.

This Coaching staff is the youngest the flames have ever had, and has the unique aspect that the GM Darryl Sutter has personally coached every single member of the coaching staff. This is a very exciting day for Flames fans, and I can't wait for the draft this Friday.
