Flyers Team Building

The Flyers just returned from their yearly trip of bonding. This year, we saw them back at the usual place, West Point Academy. On the first day the trips were split into groups of two. The had a small block on which they had to stand and sing "row row row your boat" twice without anyone touching the ground. On the website there was a full video shown of both groups attempts. The video can be seen here: http://flyers.nhl.com/tea...age&service=page

In the first group, the coaches had obvious taken to the leadership role, they are the ones usually telling the boys what to do. But there was a lot of working together and no definite player taking charge. This group cam out victorious. In the second group Marty Biron took the leadership role. Simon Gagne, alternate captain, was also seen trying to get some ideas out there, but Biron did not let him get in a word edgewise. My favorite quote from this group, although I am not sure who said it was, "who's hand is this?" This group was unsuccessful.

I am a huge advocate of team building exercises. I love doing them and am always the first to take the leadership role. My favorite part about this exercise is that it mirrored what was seen when the 1980 U.S. Miracle team won the Gold and all ran up on the small block together. This was a fun way for the boys to work thought obstacles, which they will obviously face throughout the season. Having them all stand together on a much smaller block than they could fit symbolized unity of the team.

On day two of West Point, the players began with an on ice practice. There was then a field goal kicking contest which some of the boys competed in. This day they strayed away from the team building and focused more on hockey with some long workouts in the army gym. The field goal kicking contest was highly entertaining to watch. Videos of the gym and field goal contest can be seen here:
