I decided to write on something else besides hockey. I watched UFC 74 this past sat. and i have to tell you the amount of things that goes on into this even is amazing. This event goes to show why MMA in more popular than hockey at least in the States. the way they cater to the fans and provide a venue that allows people to meet the fighter is great. Hockey brass should look at the UFC in order to increase the amount of fans and boost the ratings.

Another thing i noticed is the amount of advertising that goes into these events. These events are promoted like crazy online and on television. No wonder the UFC and Mixed Matrial Arts is a ratings giant. I think the NHL need to see how the UFC conducts buisness in regards to attraction to fans and advertising. The UFC about 6 yrs ago was watched by a small group of people. Now these days they are pulling a rating of 2.8 - 3.4 on the low end just for their 2 times a week shows. Then they have a reality show that pulls an score of 2.6 - 3.0 on avg. per week. The biggest item is the Pay Per View events they hold every few months that are viewed by millions and million all over the world. For UFC 74 that was on lat Sat. was viewed by 34 million people (Prelim est.) worldwide with a ratings score of 5.2 - 5.5.

Dont get me wrong i love hockey...always will. If the NHL wants to pull a bigger crowd of people then they have to get off their butts and step up on advertising and having events that cater to the fans more than just the ASG. I know this blog may be boring and pointless to some but this is how i feel in regards to the topic of advertising in these 2 sports.

Very interesting blog, its hard to figure out how people will flock to an even where there is a very good chance that lots of blood will be drawn. Yet, the NHL in its wisdom feels fighting keeps fans away.

If the NHL removes fighting the NHL will crumble. Fighting has been part of the sport forever and in my mind the one of the main reasons i live hockey. I live sports that people can litterily fight for their team to win.
