That is a question that all the oiler fans have and are starting to maybe even change their answer. Kevin Lowe is an amazing GM, and honestly the things he has done for the organization is pretty sweet, but not trading any of the first 3 picks of the draft for roster players might have been a great idea. Look at it, he might still make a deal, and sources all around edm...
All good things must come to an end, even the Philadelphia Flyers 5 game winning streak. But the Flyers had to try to defend that streak largely without the services of star forward Simon Gagne. The Flyers began their season-long 8 game road trip by visiting the Florida Panthers, but Olie Jokinen and Gregory Campbell made sure that the Flyers did not continue their winni...
This is my first blog on this site, and will be one of many more into the future... I hope. The players for the All-star Fan Ballots have been announced, and already there are a few notables left off... Martin Gerber, Rod Brind'amour.... etc. Now, using these two as prime examples, statistically they are among the best players in the league. Gerber leads th...
Ok, Fedoruk is on waivers. I am not surprised and I do feel that he has been given a legitimate shot to really make a positive impact on this team, but he has not. I hope he finds a home with a team that needs a little grit. He is an extremely nice guy off of the ice. I do not think he is going to get claimed unless we try to bring him back under re-entry waivers. This ...

The League Thus Far...

Posted Friday | Comments 2
And so we're approaching December.... The teams have established themselves as to where they sit in the league, where they need to improve and so on... one thing that has been very noticeable is just how incredibly inconsistant almost every team in the league has been thus far with only Detroit once again showing the constant and consistant poise it has for essential...
The Flames' need, or at least want, for a top line center to play with Jarome Iginla seems to have expanded beyond the realms of fans playing armchair GM. During the second intermission of the Flames-Sharks game on Wednesday, TSN's Darren Dreger reported that, with the issue of re-signing Dion Phaneuf now all but officially out of the way, Darryl Sutter is shopping for suc...
In past seasons Dallas' main need has always been a goal scoring winger. Last season Ryan Smyth would have been a perfect fit. In July Ryan Smyth would have been a perfect fit also, but that is another blog for another time. Right now Dallas sits 5th in goals for. Dallas also sits 6th in goals against. You can rule those Marty Turco for Martin St. Louis rumors ...
Hey pens fans, The Pens have once again recalled Tyler Kennedy from the Baby Pens. He will be here for his third stint this season. He missed a few weeks with mono and then returned to the ice in the AHL last week. He has 2 goals in his last 3 games for the Baby Pens. Rumors Count the Pens out, when it comes to Boyle. It is not likely and I don't think he would ...

Domino Effect

Probably a lot of you are wondering, when these trades are going to happen. Especially after the Ottawa trade. Now you think teams would want to respond right away well not really. They have 11 days. Also Commodore and Stillman are not BIG names. Yes, they are good players don't get me wrong and fill will fill a big role in Ottawa. Ottawa got what they needed. When I am ta...
5-2 Dallas Tomorrow I'll take a look at the Stars roster to see who the most likely trade chips are. Young players take time to develop in professional sports. 19 and 20 year olds rarely step right in take the world by storm. Steve Ott is a former 1st round pick, and this year he is beginning to show why. In the past two games Steve Ott has been throwing his body aro...
For me, the past 45 days have been spent wanting the playoffs to go on as long as possible, to prolong the inevitably long offseason for the Calgary Flames. Oh, and because it makes for better hockey, but I digress. The offseason is finally here. And my first blog post since the Flames' elimination from the playoffs will focus on two important Flames rumors: Daymond Langko...
We are approaching the draft which means many people are anticipating a bunch of trades , and major trades at that so I decided to add my two cents to the things going around. First off - The Toronto Maple leafs should not and I highly doubt they will trade for the likes of Malkin, Gaborik or Olli. Why? They need to REBUILD! And while the argument can be made t...
Olli Jokinen could be just what the Buffalo Sabres need. While everyone is focused on Buffalo's biggest, glaring needs this offseason - at defense and back-up goalie, with the forwards stocked up - the Sabres should do all in their power to acquire O.J. When I read that Florida is looking for a first round pick and two young players, my interest intensified. Buffalo...
IF the Canucks had to trade their 10th overall to get a big player in return would you do it? If it meant the Canucks getting Jokinen should we do it? With Nonis locking up all our big trade bait players to NTC it might just have to be a center piece of a big trade. The big question is would you rather have one of the top ten kids in this draft or have Olli Jokinen?...
Oh boy, Rumors Rumors Rumors! What will we hear today at 4:00Pm Pacific? The Canucks Have Drafted Kyle Beach. The Canucks Have Traded the 10th pick and and player for the number 2 pick. The Canucks Have Sent Ryan Kesler and the 10th pick for Olli Jokinen. I am expecting the Canucks to take Kyle Beach, and NOT make any big[/b...
In my first ever Hockeybuzz blog entry, I would like to look on the first five NHL Entry Drafts of the new millenium. I tried to list ten best picks from these years. This list doesn't mention neither Sid Crosby or Alex Ovechkin and others. Those aren't good picks, they are obvious picks. Rather, I have focused on the later rounds of draft and the giant pool of talent that...
After about five years at least of rumours, many dismissals, much skepticism, and about 800 different e-scale ratings, Olli Jokinen is a member of the Calgary Flames. Wow. I still haven't gotten used to the idea; after I expressed varying levels of skepticism for months, I expressed an audible “HOLY ****” when I saw the trade on the front page of TSN around noon. Darry...

Saturday Morning Coffee

The Claude Giroux that everybody has been raving about for 2 years has arrived, enjoy Flyer fans he's special. I don't mean special like Steve Downie either! Did you know that Kari Lehtonen's nickname is "The Hamburgler" he use to eat Mcdonalds before every game in his rookie season. Paul Holmgren please trade for the rights to Josh Harding, he is the answer you s...

Saturday Morning Coffee

I hate 3 point games, I hate them. Why is a 4-1 win regulation worth a total of 2 points but a 3-2 win in OT worth a total of 3? That is just stupid. Some people hate OV's celebrations, I actually don't mind them for 78 games, the 4 games against the Flyers I'm not a fan. OV's Jimi Hendrix burning stick celebration was for his 50th goal, who cares it was fun so chill...

Stealing 2 in Edmonton

Posted Friday | Comments 2
So…the Flames go in to Edmonton last Saturday and “steal” 2 points when Khabibulin flubs a clearing attempt and Moss pots the game winner. Fast forward 5 days later. Rene Bourque tips a Jay Bouwmeester point shot with less than 2 seconds left in regulation to send it to extra time, leading to a shootout win. Not to mention the Oilers get a man advantage in the OT an...

Jokinen should go.

Posted Friday | Comments 21
5.25 MILLION That should buy you a lot in the NHL, a top tier player, a player that is a huge threat and compliments your team. Jokinen is in a contract year, has never really proven himself to be a game breaker and has zero chemistry with Iginla. That doesn't mean that a huge number 1 center doesn't have trade value though, in fact Jokinen could garner a lot of intere...

Feeling Good

The Flames came out firing (no pun intended) on the Blue Jackets tonight. A well rested team hungry to re pay Columbus for a loss one week ago, the Flames took control of the game from the drop of the puck. Except for getting into some penalty trouble at the beginning and end of the second stanza, the Flames controlled much of the 5 on 5 play and came out with a the win. ...

Battle of Alberta Fight Night

For the last couple years the Edmonton Oilers had their way physically with the Calgary Flames. Steve MacIntyre would run amok on the ice and bowl over anyone that stood in his way. Enter Brian McGrattan. Cue one the best fights of the year and McGrattan landing some of biggest bombs you will ever see NOT drop a human being to his knees. A heavyweight tilt that lived u...

Lost...but we have Nice Banners

Just a few quick thoughts before I hit my pillow… The Flames have no problem starting games anymore; it is simply playing the rest of the 60 minute game that they seem to have issues with. Leading 2-0 a minute into the game and the Flames stepped off the gas pedal and idled in neutral for most of the game. They were so close to running Anderson from the net, yet they ...

October Flames

Posted Sunday | Comments 1
Well the wigs have been put away, the pumpkin in ready to go to the landfill. Yes Halloween and October are over, the NHL season is 12 games old and the Flames are 7-4-1. I was optimistic that a 5-5-2 start would have been ok considering a new coach and a new system, the 4 regulation losses except for the Dallas game (5-2) were close games that the Flames deserved a bette...

Quick Start; Poor Finish

Posted Monday | Comments 3
The month of October played out like a typical Flames game. Out of the gate with a bang; 4 straight wins, 3 in the division, and a power play running just under a 50% clip. But, just like they did so many times this month, the Flames wandered off the winning path, and gave some points back to the field. Slowly becoming the team that gives up leads, the Flames gave up numer...
This was not a typical 1-0 win, it was exciting with end to end action, great goaltending, hard hits and great action all night long. This was not a Jacques Lemaire 1-0 Minnesota Wild game, even though the Habs retro sweater looked like a Wild sweater, this was a very entertaining game to watch. Jerome Iginla scored yet another game winning goal, his 9th of the season. ...
Well the 3 game road trip through eastern Canada (Sorry Buffalo, but alot of your fans live in Hamilton) and with a 2-0-1 record you would think things in Sutterville would be all rosy. BUT they aren't. The numbers in the 3 games look like this; Montreal 1-0 win, pp 1-3, pk 3-3, Shots for 31 against 25 Buffalo 2-1 SO loss, pp 0-4, pk 3-4, Shots for 26 against 33 Toront...

A Battle for Supremacy

Posted Wednesday | Comments 2
A battle for first place in the Northwest division turned out to be a bit of a snoozer. Coming off a 3 game road trip in which they secured 5 of 6 possible points, the Flames came out looking tired. Getting beat to numerous pucks, the Flames could never find their groove in a loss to the Avalanche. For the second time this season on home ice, the Flames fell 3-2 to the Avs...
