Kotalik on Waivers

Posted 12:58 PM ET | Comments 38
Kotalik on waivers, this is a move that says buy out. If my math is correct and it usually isn't:

6 Million x .66= $3,960.000 (2/3 of the contract)

2 years x 2=4 years to pay it out

$990,000.00 over 4 years towards the cap.

in my best comic book guy from the simpsons:

" Worst....trade...ever".

Jokinen would be exactly $0.00 against the cap this year if not resigned...just saying...

Terrible trade but at least Darryl is owning it and doing something! Can't imagine heading into next season saddled with that contract. Love to see a Langkow trade still too, I like the guy but just plain out too much money for a 2nd line center when we have Stajan signed to be our second line center (hopefully)

I agree guys. Langkow could move and I would not be sad.

Sutter has totally screwed up this team. Trading Phaneuf was a huge mistake considering what he got back. Part of the problem is not all the players that come to Calgary but how Sutter and his staff smother them and humiliate them into non producing can't wait to get out of here type of players. I feel that one in ten players will respond to Sutter's method of coaching. I traded Backlund in my keeper league because Sutter will ruin him too!

I just don't know who would take that contract.
June 28, 2010 1:14 PM ET | Delete
GMs seem more hesitant to take on cap hits than at any point since the lockout. Sutter's crazy but if he can move some of those contracts it will be really impressive.
June 28, 2010 1:15 PM ET | Delete
Think it is exactly 1 million per year for the four years...but that's just semantics. This trade/situation is enough of a reason to not let Sutter make any more decisions on behalf of the Flames with regards to the roster.

Friggin rediculous. Maybe Jokinen
June 28, 2010 1:18 PM ET | Delete
Sirwin Pat from the Fan says we save 2 mill this season and 1 mil for the next two years on the cap hit.
June 28, 2010 1:18 PM ET | Delete
could have had chemistry with Hagman. Never has a chance. Is this a sign of some other move? Should Kotalik get 1 more year to rebound?
June 28, 2010 1:18 PM ET | Delete
Worst trade ever is right... However, let's remember that Sutter has placed obvious buy-out candidates on waivers before and hasn't bought anyone out yet. I'm going to temper my expectation until he's actually bought out. But, yes, on the bright side, this would be the first time Sutter has owned up to a bad deal... Another guy on the list is a horrific contract that Sutter negotiated and managed to get rid of in Vandermeer!

Mslepp he was put on Waivers to.
June 28, 2010 1:32 PM ET | Delete
If he clears then couldn't he be assigned to the minors with not cap hit? If he is assigned then I'd imagine he'd walk away from his contract and play in the KHL next year. Wouldn't cost us anything in this case would it?
June 28, 2010 1:34 PM ET | Delete
Flamesin6- yeah they could bury his contract in the minors and pay him 6 million but ownership would probably want to just pay him 4 million if he's not going to play with the bigs.
June 28, 2010 1:37 PM ET | Delete
if he walks and balks I don'think we have to pay his contract.
June 28, 2010 1:40 PM ET | Delete
If Kotalik can get 4 mil out of the Flames and THEN sign in KHL it serves him better to do it, he doesn't owe the flames any loyalty and that is a lot of money to turn down...
June 28, 2010 2:08 PM ET | Delete
If he clears waivers they better buy the guy out (as ridiculous as it is) but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't.
June 28, 2010 2:19 PM ET | Delete
just bury him in the minors. why pay the cap hit for four years?
June 28, 2010 2:21 PM ET | Delete
Hoop, it's cheaper to buy him out - $4M over the next four years over $6M over next two. However, it's also worse on our cap.
June 28, 2010 2:25 PM ET | Delete
I know it's cheaper but if ownership was that worried about the money they could just self impose a million bucks off the cap, and then if they decide to at the trade deadline spend that money. If you buy him out and the cap goes down in a year or two then we are really screwed.
June 28, 2010 2:25 PM ET | Delete
Unless we do something significant on trade/UFA, just play him, he'll be easier to unload at trade deadline with 1 year left
June 28, 2010 2:37 PM ET | Delete
The timing of the waiving would indicate that a buy out is coming. Nilson went through this before being released to go play in the KHL which is still a possibility however unlikely.
June 28, 2010 2:41 PM ET | Delete
Most if not all of the RFA's were just qualified as well.
June 28, 2010 3:55 PM ET | Delete
White Qualified as well for around 1 million, negotiations are on going for a multi year to avoid arbitration.

June 28, 2010 9:36 PM ET | Delete
Karlsson should be a cheap and more reliable backup. Good on Sutter for that. I'd like to think a bigger chip is about to fall due to the buyout...more to come.
June 28, 2010 9:58 PM ET | Delete
Yup I think its a center for Iggy.

i am going to have faith in sutter one more time, we flames fans can bitch about jokinen for kotalik and higgins until the cows come home, but its done, and its nice to see that darryl is owning up to it, and dealing with him, cause 990,000 against the cap is better than kotalik in a flames jersey.and the flames have made bigger mistakes, such as the trade that sent gilmour to the leafs for Gary leeman? GARY LEEMAN?
June 28, 2010 10:34 PM ET | Delete
GlenX Langkow Regehr for Spezza and Neil. If we have to, throw in one of our D prospects for a future pick.
June 28, 2010 10:34 PM ET | Delete
Yes, Risebrough has the distinction for the worst god awful trade in Flames history. Still taking meds over that one.
June 28, 2010 10:35 PM ET | Delete
Hey Flames34, where do I sign for that one!
June 29, 2010 11:09 AM ET | Delete
I'd rather keep Glenny if it's possible. Send Moss or Dawes, or both instead.
June 29, 2010 1:24 PM ET | Delete
Langkow has real perceived value but I wouldn't hate that trade. I met Riser in my shop and gave him grief about that exact trade actually...
June 29, 2010 4:35 PM ET | Delete
I agree about Langkow, many dont agree with us. Is that conference Ken King had for real
