Blues Sign Nichol, Re-Sign Bishop

Two signings the Blues have made today...
The Blues Tuesday afternoon signed center Scott Nichol to a one-year, $600,000 contract.
The 36-year old veteran played in 56 games last season with the San Jose Sharks, tallying four goals and three assists. Nichol has also spent time in his 12-year career with Buffalo, Clagary, Chicago, and Nashville.
Nichol is known around St. Louis as a Blues' killer. In his career, Nichol has haunted the Blues for 10 goals and six assists in 39 games. He is also a quality faceoff man, something the Blues needed coming into this season after they traded away Jay McClement last season to Colorado in the deal that brought forward Chris Stewart and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk to St. Louis. Last season, Nichol was 59.4 percent on draws.
Nichol is projected to be the team's fourth-line center coming into this season.
Although the team has improved it's depth, GM Doug Armstorng was quoted by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jeremy Rutherford as saying "This doesn't preclude us from doing other things if we want to improve our team...I'm always looking to improve it."
Also, the Blues re-signed goaltender Ben Bishop earlier this morning to a one-year, two-way contract.
Bishop will be battling newly-signed goalie Brian Elliott for the backup goaltender's job in training camp going into this season.
The 24-year old will make $600,000 on the NHL roster and $105,000 with Peoria of the AHL.

Nicole was a great guy to have. He played with a great deal of energy and gave it his all every time. I'm kinda bummed the sharks didn't keep him for another season.

I, for one, am glad the Blues signed Nichol. Not only because of the energy factor you mentioned, but the fact that he's efficient on faceoffs and is a penalty-kill specialist. The Blues have replaced the loss of Jay McClement with a guy that plays a similar style, and has some offensive skill as well.
