Well, perhaps this Edmonton offer sheet thing has been beaten to death, especially since Strickland seemingly launched a Molotov cocktail onto Whyte with his latest blog. But maybe there is a method to Lowe's offer sheet madness.

So for all of you who think Lowe is crazy or overpaying for "unproven" talent, think of his offer sheet like a poker game. I don't think Kevin Lowe actually wants Penner, and the theory seems to be that Burke signing Penner would make it difficult to retain both Perry and Getzlaf (who, in my opinion, are better young players). One of two things happens in RFA Poker showdown:

1) Burke calls Lowe's bluff and doesn't match. Lowe loses his three picks and overpays for a young talent. But the fact that he's got a good, young prospect means it's a risk he's willing to take.

OR

2) Burke matches, and later has trouble resigning Lowe's actual targets of Perry and Getzlaf because of other shorter-term signings (like Bertuzzi or Snieder). Lowe puts in another offer sheet to either and gets his man.

Either way, it's a win-win for Lowe because he's getting players who in all likelihood, will be good for years to come. Although I think he would prefer scenario number two, where he can force better talent into the market. I think the better question is whether or not it is right to sacrifice the entire league's market for player salaries in an attempt to better your team.
