If you didn't see it, Sean Avery of the Rangers had a heated argument with Jason Blake and Darcy Tucker of the Maple Leafs during practice prior to their game on Saturday. The incident apparently was instigated by Avery. The former LA King was arguing with Tucker before he shoved Blake. Tucker then aimed his stick at the Rangers' agitator, and then the two got in each other's faces. While everyone thought it was simply Avery being Avery, many reports have surfaced that the Rangers' pest was mocking Blake about having cancer.
Although nothing has been confirmed, you'd have to believe the accusations are true, considering many media outlets across North America have given mention to the incident. Howard Berger of The Fan 590 in Toronto first reported the news on the air, and TSN is reporting that Colin Campbell plans to meet with Avery about the altercation. Most Rangers players avoided the issue when confronted by the press after the game, and Avery also stayed mum on the subject. Darcy Tucker called him classless, and Leafs enforcer Wade Belak offered his two cents:
"He's pissing guys off. He'll bring harm to himself and not too many guys around the league are going to be sad to see it. If he keeps this up, someone is going to kill him. One day he's going to say something the wrong way and he'll be clubbed. And I'm not saying it will be by me, either."
Is that a promise or a threat? Another report states:
"A player from the rangers that wants to remain nameless, said that he wanted to strangle Avery for making a cancer remark to Blake. When Blake was asked about it, instead of making a comment he made a face/gesture that confirmed that a comment was made."
I'll go with the assumption that Avery did in fact make a wise crack about Jason Blake having chronic myelogenous, a rare form of leukemia. (The former Islander was diagnosed within the first weeks of the season.) Let me say this first; Sean Avery is an agitator. He gets paid to get under the other teams' skin and energize his team. He's arguably the most hated man in the game. I respect what he brings to a team; the Rangers are a completely different hockey club when he's in the lineup. With that said, he took being an agitator to a new level Saturday. He crossed the line and he should and will pay for his actions.
Most people who aren't Ranger fans absolutely despise Number 16. If you don't, watch this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pOwsEQ7jFak With these allegations, he just gave hockey fans and players another reason to hate him. Whether the league takes disciplinary action against Avery or whether players on the Leafs or even friends of Blake's here on the Island take exception to the comments in a game setting remains to be seen. I think a fine at the very least is warranted, and it's only a matter of time before someone goes head-hunting for the Rangers' forward.
The player has precedent and notoriety for completely idiotic comments like this. First, he made derogatory remarks a few seasons ago about "French-Canadian visor-wearers." (Hello, MAB!) Next, it's rumors about making racial remarks about now-Penguins forward Georges Laraque. And now he's making fun of a man who's going through life-changing treatment to stay alive and beat a disease; what kind of heartless punk are you, Sean Avery? You make me SICK.
Darcy Tucker said it best. (Wow, you know it's bad when I'm on his side.) Smack-talk is part of the game, but when you take it to a personal level and bring outside people into the matter, you're out of line.
Here's what I think: There has to be something emotionally or psychologically wrong with this cat. Maybe he wasn't hugged enough as a child. Maybe he hung around with the wrong crowd growing up. Maybe he's still bitter about getting dumped by Elisha Cuthbert. Whatever the reason, Avery needs to shut up and play. The NHL doesn't need him garnering any more negative publicity.
What's even more sickening to me is while looking around the internet researching certain things for this blog, I saw that a couple of Ranger fans approved of Avery's actions and praised his work as an agitator. Classy. Real classy. (Although I will admit most of them didn't support Avery.)
I'm a nice guy. I'd never wish harm on anyone, especially a player who puts his body at risk by playing the game I love. In this instance, Sean Avery is the exception. As far as I'm concerned, the name Sean Avery is synonymous with "gutless puke," as Eric Cairns once dubbed another former Ranger. If he ever got severely injured or contracted a disease like Blake has, I for one would not feel an ounce of sympathy.

Well said, Pete. I totally agree with you.
Why would you have to believe the accusations because Howard Berger has some source hes not willing to share? Do you think Avery and the Rangers would be looking into a law suit if he had said it? Better yet, Jason Blake stated in the Globe and Mail (a Canadian Newspaper) that he never heard Avery say that and Tucker never said Avery said that. Not to mention Paul Maurice stated he had no problem with Avery's pre game antics; im sure he wouldnt have been so sympathetic if Avery had dropped a cancer remark. Basically everyone who was directly involved in the incident has said it never happened or said that they didnt hear it...but your right Howard Berger and other media outlets probably are right with their accusations. I mean why would they want to stir the pot and create press, right? And please dont take this as someone who sympathesizes with a player who would stoop to the level in question. I am merely just pointing out that Avery's comments are nothing more than rumors and hear say. In fact with Blake saying he never heard Avery make those remarks the issue itself is practically non existent.
I only defended Avery because of Tucker, Blake and Maurice all saying they didn't hear the "cancer" remark. Avery does what he does best by getting under your skin. You can say "oh, he'll get his!".. but that just means we'll get more and more powerplays.
Wow, another Isles fan commeting on the Rangers. You and other Isles fans have NO room to talk after what Simon did last year. Hypocritical much? For God's sake, this loser is still on your team! Words are words but....
Simon put a stick in Ryan "I can't stay on my feet" Hollweg, he did not mock Hollweg for having Cancer. One of these items is something a hot headed moron would do. The other is something a classless puke would do,
So i guss now the argument is whats worse? Being a hot headed morn? Or a classless puke? lol
1. everyones a "nice guy"......noone cares abt your personal life2. no hard evidence3. how can you suspend/fine a guy for allegedly hurting someones feelings...he said/she said4. Im guessing your conclusion to the whole Simon incident is just as negative as this article here right??? no probly not, you and the rest of your fans still probably believe he "blacked out" or "doesnt remember doing it" or fell under some sort of magical spell......yeah right
OK well Chris "Homerun King" Simon makes me sick and I don't complain about it as much as you Isles fans over this. It had nothing to do with your club so just shut up.
It was who Milbury called Travis Green a "gutless puke".
Rags fan are unbelievable! There sticking up for this clown?! You guys go on ahead and justify it by saying "Chris Simon did this!"....Well, all your weak attempts to justify it(he's a pest, blah blah blah), is proof enough that what he did was wrong and you all are just arguing because it's a Isles fan that brought it up. You'll be hard pressed to find many Isles fan on this board that stuck up for Chris Simon. But you know what I'll guarentee you that if next week Jagr or Gomex or Avery or Drury drilled an Islander in the face(and actually connects with the face, not the chest/shoulder) you all would be up in arms if they were suspended and would argue to the death that the Ranger player was right. You guys are a classless as they come. What if someone made a crack about you if you had cancer or your sister, brother, mother, father or any other relative, i bet you'd be upset(unless you Grandfather is and Isles fan, the you'd back the Rangers fan that made fun of his cancer). You guys need to grow up and realize it's a game and when it comes to something as frightening as cancer I dont care who's team the player is on or played for, it's nothing to joke or make cracks about.
Well I would say that the big difference is that there was clear proof of the Simon incident but the Avery incident is nothing more than a RUMOR! If you are so sure that Avery said it explain to me this....why did Blake say he never heard him say it? Why hasnt Tucker (who despises Avery) say that Avery said it? Why did Leafs coach Paul Maurice say he had no problem with what Avery did (I doubt if he had said something regarding Blakes cancer Maurice wouldnt have been so sympathetic)? Why did Shanny say he went and confirmed with the Leaf players involved and was told that they never heard it? Oh ya, but Howard Berger said he heard from some mysterious Rangers player that the comment was said...give me a break. Avery isnt a saint and to tell you the truth it probably wouldnt surprise anyone if he said something that stupid...but this time the facts just dont add up. Im not defending Avery's history, but this time it just doesnt make sense. I would like to hear your argument for why he said it though...
I believe there was about 1/3 of a coliseum that cheered when Simon took the stick to Hollwegs throat talk about classless, if you're going to make assumtion and stand up on your soapbox, get some real hard facts first or maybe just worry about your own club
