Pregaming with the Blues harder than Edmonton Postgames

It’s time to look ahead to the Blues game tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. Be warned, Blues fans. If the Oilers give up an early lead, by the first intermission, the fans will likely call for the firing of a coach, a GM or a combination thereof. Wait, wrong Canadian team. Do we play the Leafs this year?

The last time these two teams met on December 7th, the Oilers beat Brad Boyes 3-2 on a late goal from Mary Reasoner. Unfortunately, the Oilers were playing the Blues, who won 4-3. Doug Weight, the Blues’ acquisition in the blockbuster Marty Reasoner trade, scored his first goal since the fall of the Roman Empire, and Jay McClement, born shortly before Weight’s first child, got his first point since Oct. 3.

Season Series: Blues 1 win – Edmonton 0 wins

Last Game: The Blues lost 9-5 on the last game of a road trip to the Colorado Avalanche. The Oilers kicked off a three game road trip Monday with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars. Matthieu Garon replaced starter Dwayne Roloson after Rolie had a “Patrick Lalime” performance, giving up three goals on six shots.

Special Shout Out: to Oilers’ D-man Tom Gilbert. During the last meeting, he knocked in Weight’s goal and took a penalty that resulted in a power play goal for the Blues. Thanks, Tom. Your Christmas card’s in the mail.

Hot hand for the Oilers: Going into their Monday night game against Dallas, Shawn Horcoff had a six game scoring streak and extended it to seven games against Dallas. If we learned anything from the Milan Hejduk fiasco, we should probably keep an eye on him. Additionally, Horcoff is the opposing team in my fantasy hockey league this week, so please don’t let him score.

Hot hand for the Blues: Lee Stempniak has had a four game point streak with 3 goals and an assist during the span. Would you believe that the Blues used the pick from Phoenix in the Tyson Nash trade to get this guy?

Scratches: The Oilers have had their fair share of injuries this year, but last Thursday, they had two key heathy scratches: Jarett Stoll and Raffi Torres. In the game against Dallas, both registered a point.

Special Teams: The Blues are second in the league on the Penalty Kill at 88.5%, but 26th on the Power Play. Edmonton is dead last on the Power Play at just over 11% and 9th in the league on the Power Play.

Prior to Monday’s games, the Blues were 10th in the entire league in points, but third in overall winning percentage behind Ottawa and Detroit.

Dwayne Roloson was the scheduled starter for Edmonton’s Monday night game, so Blues fans will likely see Mathieu Garon, who is 7-5 with a 2.54 GAA. Garon was the starter in the Thursday game against the Blues. In the last game, Roloson gave up three goals on six shots before Garon came in to let up two more goals. In St. Louis, Garon is 2-0-0 in his career with a 1.92 GAA.
